    Penn sweeps Saturday duals

NEW YORK -- An arduous journey through the Empire State concluded with a pair of wins that came down to the wire for the University of Pennsylvania wrestling team as the Quakers defeated Binghamton, 21-15, in the afternoon before a 21-20 win at Columbia to close the day.

The two wins concluded a 26-hour span which saw Penn compete in three duals in three different towns in New York. Penn went 2-1 on the swing, rallying for the two wins after a 27-10 loss at No. 9 Cornell on Friday night.

    Penn Bests Binghamton
Faced with a 15-9 deficit and just three matches remaining against the Bearcats in the opener, Penn secured decision victories at 149 and 157 pounds to set the stage for Brooks Martino at 165.

A fifth-year senior with time winding down on his career, Martino dialed up a big moment with a pin to win the dual, sticking Jake Einbinder at 4:56 to give the Red and Blue the victory.

The Red and Blue were bolstered by bonus points as the two teams each won five bouts. No. 13 Casey Kent started the dual with a 17-0 technical fall at 174, and No. 17 Frank Mattiace would notch a major decision at 197 via a 12-3 win over Mark Tracy.

Those wins kept the Red and Blue in range as Binghamton won four straight bouts from heavyweight to 141 and took a 15-9 lead.

Joe Oliva would start the rally with a 9-4 decision at 149 over Parker Kropman, scoring a late takedown to break open a two-point match.

May Bethea needed overtime to secure a 9-7 decision over Tristan Rifanburg, finishing on the winning takedown with just 0:05 left in sudden victory. Bethea had to rally to force overtime, scoring a takedown late in regulation to extend the match.

    Quakers Tame Lions
The day's second dual was eerily similar to the first one. Penn built an early lead, jumping out to a 14-0 cushion after a tech fall from Casey Kent, a decision from Joe Heyob and a pin from Frank Mattiace.

Despite the early advantage, the Red and Blue had to rally after four straight Columbia wins gave the Lions a 17-14 lead. Columbia matched Penn's early bonus points, recording a tech fall and pin of its own before an 8-1 decision from Jacob Macalolooy at 14 gave the Lions a three-point lead with three matches left.

Once again, Oliva and Bethea helped seal the win for Penn. Faced with the potential of a loss via criteria, Oliva and Bethea scored lots of points. For Oliva, three takedowns and a reversal led to a 10-4 decision over Sam Ward at 141.

May Bethea followed with his latest in a line of crucial wins. He connected on a takedown in the final 10 seconds and rode out for a 12-4 major decision to give Penn a four-point lead with one bout left.

Joe Velliquette scored the first takedown at 165 against Tyrel White, and that score helped hold on to the team win as Tyrel White was unable to secure a bonus point at 165 in an 8-4 decision.
