Penn handles Binghamton, Thomas gets 100th win

PHILADELPHIA -- Lorenzo Thomas joined an elite group of wrestlers at the University of Pennsylvania, picking up his 100th career win as the Quakers defeated Binghamton, 24-9, in an EIWA dual at The Palestra.

Thomas scored an 8-1 decision over No. 17 Steven Schneider at 184 pounds to become the 11th Penn wrestler to win 100 matches during his career. Thomas is the first Quakers to reach the 100-win mark while competing mostly at 184 pounds.

After a scoreless first period, Thomas scored an escape and a takedown in the second period to take a 3-1 lead. In the third, he added four points of nearfall and almost 3:00 of riding time to reach the century mark.

The win from Thomas was one of seven in the dual meet for the Quakers who won their third consecutive dual meet to improve to 3-1 overall.

No. 17 Casey Kent improved to 17-4 this season with a 4-0 decision over Jack McKeever. An early takedown in the first period and over 2:00 of riding time from that score were the big difference in the win for Kent.

After the two teams split wins to start the dual, Penn won six straight bouts to take a commanding 24-3 lead. Marc Mastropietro started the run with a 5-1 win in sudden victory over Dylan Caruana. Mastropietro countered a Caruana shot with an upper body takedown and then added a pair of nearfall points for his second overtime win in as many matches.

After a forfeit win for C.J. Cobb at 149 pounds, No. 18 May Bethea defeated Vincent DePrez, 9-6. Bethea had four takedowns in the win. Including two in the second period which helped overcome a first period deficit.

Brooks Martino bumped up to 165 pounds with usual starter Ray Bethea out with injury. His bump was rewarded with a 6-3 decision over Anthony DePrez. Martino trailed, 3-1, midway through the match but scored a takedown before the end of the second period and another in the third for the win.

Binghamton won the final two matches, including an overtime win from Mark Tracy over freshman Robert Ng at 197 pounds. Ng had the lead after a takedown in the second period, but a rally from Tracy in the third gave him a late lead. Ng forced overtime when Tracy was called for stalling a second time with 0:16 left in regulation, but a takedown 25 seconds into overtime was the difference in a 7-5 win for Tracy. Connor Calkins snuck out a 4-3 decision over Patrik Garren with a takedown in the final 10 seconds at heavyweight to close the dual.

Penn begins Ivy League duals on January 30 at Princeton at 4 p.m. on January 31, Penn hosts Rider in The Palestra at 12 p.m.
