Oregon State rolls to victory over Boise State

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The 18th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team won its first six individual bouts en route to a 32-10 defeat of rival Boise State Sunday afternoon at Gill Coliseum.

Taylor Meeks, Clayton Jack, James Roberts, Mike Mangrum and Scott Sakaguchi all kept their perfect records intact in the 22-point win over the Broncos, snapping Boise State's eight-meet undefeated (7-0-1) streak in the series.

Meeks and Roberts each won via pins as did Pat Rollins, who picked up his fourth fall of the season. For Meeks, it was his fourth as well and Roberts improved to 5-0 in bouts decided by pins.

The match started off at 197 pounds and Meeks didn't waste much time in giving OSU (2-0 overall) a 6-0 lead. He pinned Boise State's Derek Toney in 1:39. In wins over Boise State and Simon Fraser this weekend, Meeks amassed a total wrestling time of 2:21 in his two pins.

Jack (heavyweight) extended his season-starting win streak to seven with an 8-2 decision over J.T. Felix in a rematch of the 2011 Pac-10 Championships first-place bout in the heavyweight class. Jack came into Sunday's bout ranked eighth while Felix was 18th.

Rollins (125 pounds) kept the Beavers' early streak going when he downed Boise State's Isaac Romero in 5:47. He snapped a two-bout losing streak with the win.

Roberts (133 pounds) made it four straight and pushed OSU's lead to 21-0 when it took him 3:43 to down Shawn Jones. Roberts is a perfect 8-0 on the year with three of his last four victories coming via falls.

Mangrum, who improved to 7-0 this season, did so via his second major decision of the season. He defeated the Broncos' (0-1) Josh Strait, 14-6, at 141 pounds.

Sakaguchi made it six straight when he also picked up a major decision, 13-5, over Nick Wooden at 149 pounds. Sakaguchi led the Beavers with 26 wins a year ago and is already on pace for another impressive season with a 7-0 record early on.

RJ Pena, at 157 pounds, saw his seven-bout win streak come to an end on an 8-6 loss to George Ivanov. A stall warning had tied the bout at six late in period three, but Ivanov was able to pull out the takedown halfway through the sudden victory overtime period, giving him the win.

Ty Vinson (174 pounds) was Oregon State's seventh and final individual winner Sunday when a late takedown in the third period proved the two points he needed in a 4-3 victory over Scott Bacon, That put the score at 32-6 with Boise State's major decision by Jake Swartz at 184, the final bout of the day, finishing the score at 32-10.

Michael Cuthbertson was Boise State's third winner of the day when he picked up a 4-2 decision over Cody Weishoff at 165.

Oregon State's next matchup comes the day after Thanksgiving, on Friday, against Missouri. It's slated for a 7 p.m. PT start at Gill Coliseum. Missouri is ranked ninth in the nation while the Beavers are 18th.
