    Olympic silver medalist Givehchi dead at 84

    Nasser Givehchi, silver medalist for Iran at the 1952 Olympics, has died, United World Wrestling announced May 31. He was 84.

    Givehchi died May 15 after a long illness in his home in Tehran, according to Iran Press TV.

    At age 19, Givehchi placed second in featherweight freestyle competition at 63 kilograms/138.5 pounds at the 1952 Summer Games in Helsinki, Finland, losing to Turkey's Bayram Sit in the gold-medal match. The bronze medal was awarded to Josiah Henson of the United States.

    Four years later, Givehchi wrestled for Iran at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, placing sixth in the same weight class.

    In 1958, Givehchi won a gold medal at the Asian Games in Tokyo.

    After concluding his wrestling career, Givehchi moved into coaching, serving as the head coach of Iran's national Greco-Roman wrestling teams. He was also an international wrestling referee.
