"Our guys wrestled hard on the road tonight," said head coach Steve Martin. "Warner and Jeske put a lot of points on the board, which was good to see. Mecate, Richardson, Dechow and Henderson wrestled smart and looked good as well. We had several close fought matches that could have gone either way with TC, Cobrun and Beazley. This competition will further prepare us for the MAC tournament. We look forward to competing against a tough CMU team on Sunday."
After dropping to opening 133-pond bout, redshirt junior No. 9 Chris Mecate (149) earned three points for ODU after defeating Michael Shaw by a 5-3 decision. Mecate earned two early takedowns in the first period and earned a penalty point to reach the final margin. No. 9 Lenny Richardson won the 149-pound bout by forfeit to give the Monarchs a 9-4 lead.
Freshman TC Warner dropped a close 5-3 bout to Brandon Zeerip, as the Eagles climbed back to just three points (10-7) with six matches left. No. 13 Tristan Warner increased ODU’s lead (14-7) as he recorded his third tech fall of the season with a 17-1 margin over Austin Geerlings. He notched three takedowns, one reversal, two three-point nearfalls and two penalty points during his match.
The Eagles responded by winning the 174-pound match, as Kayne MacCallum defeated Austin Coburn by a 3-1 decision. ODU led 14-10 with four bouts to go.
All-American, No. 2 Jack Dechow, earned his 14th-consecutive dual win by defeating Michael Curby by a 4-2 decision, giving ODU a 17-10 lead. With riding time combined with a takedown and an escape, Dechow claimed the win and his 18th in a row. Anthony Arbo pulled the Eagles to within four points (17-13) when he defeated Kevin Beazley in sudden victory (3-1) after recording a takedown.
Jake Henderson won the 285-pound bout, after notching one takedown and a three-point nearfall in the first period. With riding time, Henderson took down Gage Hutchinson by a 6-1 decision to give the Monarchs a 20-13 lead with just the 125-pound match to go.
Brandon Jeske ended the night on a strong note, defeating Blake Caudill by a 17-2 technical fall. He notched three takedowns, three three-point nearfalls and one reversal.
