"We are proud of how our guys competed hard for seven minutes today against Kent State," said Head Coach Steve Martin. "We knew coming in it was going to be a scrap. I give KSU credit, as they always get up for our match. The matches against Buffalo and KSU were both hard fought and what I was impressed with was the amount of bonus points we put up this weekend and the little things, like Michael Hayes taking Mack McQuire down to the wire to how hard we fought. We are getting better each week and we look forward to the Ohio dual on Friday!"
Kent State jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, as No. 2 Ian Miller recorded a 19-5 major decision over Devin Geoghegan at the 157-pound weight class.
Old Dominion took control of the match, winning the next four bouts. No. 14 Tristan Warner once again recorded a win at 165 pounds, defeating Tyler Buckwalter by an 8-1 decision. He is now a perfect 11-0 in dual meets with just six left in the season. Austin Coburn followed Warner with a 3-2 decision at 174 pounds to give ODU the 6-4 lead.
No. 2 Jack Dechow earned four more points for ODU (10-4) by taking down Jerald Spohn by a 16-6 major decision. He is now 19-1 on the year and 10-1 in dual action. No. 22 Kevin Beazley recorded the fourth-straight win for ODU and his 21st win of the season with an 8-5 decision over No. 24 Cole Baxter, giving the Monarchs a 13-4 advantage.
No. 33 Mimmo Lytle recorded the Golden Flashes second win of the day in the heavyweight bout. No. 29 Jake Henderson fought hard with Lytle, but fell 4-3 in tiebreaker three due to Lytle’s 26 seconds of riding time. ODU still held a lead over Kent State, but it was only a 13-7 advantage with four matches left.
No. 17 Brandon Jeske increased the ODU lead to 16-7 when he took down Del Vinas by a 6-2 decision. No. 15 Mack McGuire notched the last win for the Golden Flashes, winning the 133-pound bout by a 4-3 decision. With two bouts left, ODU held a 16-10 advantage over Kent State.
No. 9 Chris Mecate and No. 10 Lenny Richardson secured the 25-10 victory for ODU, claiming wins in their respective weight classes. Mecate recorded a 3-1 sudden victory win over No. 31 Tyler Small, while Richardson defeated Mike DePalma by a fall just 1:30 into the match.
The Wrestling Monarchs will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 30, as they host MAC opponent Ohio for a 7:30 p.m. match.
