    Old Dominion defeats Central Michigan

NORFOLK, Va. -- The 17th-ranked Old Dominion wrestling team earned a 22-9 victory over Central Michigan, which marks the teams 12th dual win of the season and fifth-consecutive Mid-American Conference win of the year.

The Monarchs advance to 12-4 on the season and 5-1 in the MAC, while Central Michigan falls to 7-6 overall and 5-2 in the conference.

"We are proud of the way our guys wrestled today in a very hostile environment. We competed with a lot of energy, excitement and focus, which is what you have to do on day four of a road trip," said Head Coach Steve Martin. "It excites me as a coach to see our kids having fun! We have never beaten CMU at their place so we knew it would be a challenge. All 10 of our guys were in positions to win each of their matches."

"Austin Coburn was in the zone today and wrestled very well. It was good to see him continue to attack throughout the match. Kevin Beazley did a great job and was very close to a fall in the first period and then continued to dominate his opponent. Henderson wrestled well on the top position, which is something we have been stressing with him all year long. Jeske wrestled his style and wrestled hard for seven minutes and he is doing so at the right time of the year. Hayes had several opportunities to win his match against a ranked wrestler and I was pleased with his effort. Chris Mecate lost on a stall call in the rideout, which is something you don't see often. Although the match went to overtime, we missed out on several scoring opportunities. This will make him more determined heading into the MAC tournament."

"Lenny wrestled well in defeating No. 17 Heffernan and continues to put points on the board. Devin Geoghegan wrestled hard as well. Tristan Warner continues to lead our team in dual meet victories, as he is undefeated. He does what he does best and that is score back points! Dechow put himself in a position to score a lot of points in his match and poured it on throughout. We are a very good team and we did a great job focusing on scoring points today. We look forward to our last two duals at UNI on Friday night and NIU on Sunday!"

No. 23 Kevin Beazley (197) started the match off with a win, taking down Jackson Lewis by a 10-4 decision. Beazley is now 24-12 on the season and 10-6 in dual action.

ODU took a 9-0 lead over Central Michigan, after No. 28 Jake Henderson (285) and No. 25 Brandon Jeske (125) each recorded a win. Henderson took down Adam Robinson by a 5-2 decision, while Jeske defeated Brant Fleetwood by a 3-1 decision.

The Chippewas answered by winning the next two matches over the Monarchs. Michael Hayes (133) fell to No. 32 Tyler Keselring by a 2-0 decision, while No. 9 Chris Mecate (141) was downed in tie-breaker one (3-1) by No. 10 Zach Horan.

No. 9 Lenny Richardson (149) gave ODU a 12-9 lead after he took down No. 17 Colin Heffernan by a 5-2 decision to earn his 22nd win of the year. Central Michigan bounced back by winning the 157-pound bout. Cody LeCount defeated Devin Geoghegan, 4-3, to pull within three points (12-9) with three matches left.

No. 13 Tristan Warner earned his 15th-straight dual win by defeating No. 31 Jordan Wohlfert by a 6-1 decision to give the Monarchs a 15-9 lead going into the 174-pound bout. Austin Coburn did not disappoint, as he took down No. 30 Jordan Ellingwood in sudden-victory by a 3-1 decision. ODU led 18-9 with just the 184-pound bout left.

No. 2 Jack Dechow closed out the day with his 20th-consecutive win, with an 11-2 major decision over Austin Severn to secure the 22-9 win over the Chippewas.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to take on Northern Iowa on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. ODU will close the regular season on Sunday in DeKalb, Ill. to take on Northern Illinois at 3:00 p.m.
