    Oklahoma State defeats Nebraska, 27-15

STILLWATER, Okla. (http://www.okstate.com/) -- Brandon Mason recorded the biggest win in his young Cowboy career defeating third-ranked Jacob Klein, sparking second-ranked Oklahoma State (13-1, 4-0) to a 27-15 victory over fifth-ranked Nebraska (11-4, 1-1) inside Gallagher-Iba Arena on Friday night.

    Brandon Mason defeated Jacob Klein.
Mason avoided being ridden out in the second period by reversing Klein to put the first points on the board. Klein got too aggressive in the third period trying to tie the match and Mason countered to scored the takedown to seal the match.

"I knew I had to get out," Mason said afterward. "His gameplan was to pick feet in the third and ride me out in the second. The reversal changed the complexion of the match.

"This is a stepping stone for me. Every match I am trying to get better. Nothing matters until Big 12s or nationals anyway. I am just trying to get better and improve myself so that I am ready to go at nationals."

Rusty Blackmon followed Mason's big win with an upset of his own. Blackmon defeated 10th-ranked Vince Jones with an 8-4 decision. Blackmon dominated Jones from the top position riding out the entire second period and collecting three near fall points in the process. Blackmon was so dominant from the top position that he used his option to take top. Jones managed to score a reversal late to make the score appear closer.

"There were some good matches tonight and it was good to see some fire in our belly at 174 and 184," head coach John Smith said. "It seems like we have not had one of those where somebody step up and get an upset and they both got it done tonight."

The Cowboys were in control at this point leading the dual 15-3 after five matches. Zack Esposito started things off with a technical fall at 149. Chris Oliver won a decision over Kevin Ward and Johny Hendricks added a major decision over Marc Harwood.

The most anticipated bout of the night was at 197 where second-ranked Jake Rosholt No. 5 B.J. Padden. Rosholt was the aggressor early scoring a quick takedown 20 seconds into the match. Padden gave up a penalty point for an elbow but quickly tightened it up with a reversal. Padden added another reversal in the second period and the match was tied after a Rosholt escape.

The Match turned screwy in the third period. Rosholt escaped and took a shot and a scramble ensued. Each wrestler had a leg with no control but Rosholt was on his head and rolled onto his shoulders and official Jim Rimirez slapped the mat signaling a fall.

    Steve Mocco pinned Jon May.
Steve Mocco got it back for the Cowboys with a fall in 42 seconds over Jon May, and the two sophomores Coleman Scott and Nathan Morgan continue to win each recording decisions. Dominick Moyer closed out the dual with a second period fall over Justin Porter who was wrestling up a weight.

Head coach John Smith was pleased with his team's performance afterwards, but was disappointed the Cowboys gave up 15 points after allowing just one takedown for Nebraska. Nebraska's lone takedown was a foot sweep by 133-pounder Patrick Aleksanyan that caught Nathan Morgan off guard just six seconds into the match.

"I was disappointed that we gave up 15 points and they only got one takedown," Smith said. That tells me we are flipping and flopping on the mat way too much. We got pinned in two matches where we did not give up a takedown. Those are mistakes that you can go back and correct.

The Cowboys will return to the mat on Friday when Hofstra visits Stillwater for a 7 p.m. dual. OSU will then look to avenge its only loss at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City on Sunday against top-ranked Minnesota in a dual televised by ESPNU.
