Ohio takes care of Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Ohio wrestling team avenged last year's 24-12 loss to Virginia Tech with a 30-16 victory over the Hokies on Saturday at Cassell Coliseum. The Bobcats (9-8) used a pin by Terry Jackson, major decisions by Aaron Gomoll, Jake Frerichs and Ryan Knapp and a pair of forfeits at 184 and 197 pounds to earn the win.

The meet began with a hard-fought battle at 125 pounds when Virginia Tech's Justin Staylor broke a 2-2 tie in the third period with a reversal and riding time to pull out a 5-2 decision over Caleb Metcalf (Waterville, Ohio).

Jackson quickly put Ohio on the board, though, by pinning Hokie 133-pounder Sheridan Moran just 2:07 into the next match. The redshirt freshman from Uhrichsville, Ohio, improved to 9-3 in duals this season with his third straight win.

After 16th-ranked David Hoffman pinned Bobcat 141-pounder Frank Brown to give Virginia Tech a 9-6 lead, Ohio bounced back with major decisions in the next two matches for a 14-9 advantage at the meet's midway point.

Gomoll's 14-4 victory over Joe Thompson at 149 pounds was the fourth major decision of the year for the junior from Bay Village, Ohio. Frerichs, a redshirt freshman from Uniontown, Ohio, followed that up with a 10-1 major decision over Dave Kiley in the 157-pound bout.

"Getting major decisions from Gomoll and Frerichs was big for us," said Bobcat head coach Joel Greenlee, who improved his career dual meet coaching record to 98-68-4. "I think Gomoll is finally starting to come around and wrestle with confidence. And the same thing with Jake, his knees are finally healthy after having surgery earlier this season."

The Hokies (0-15) closed the gap to one with a 10-2 major decision by Tucker Michels over Kent Smith (Bowling Green, Ohio) at 165 pounds but Ohio sealed the victory with three straight wins, beginning with Knapp's 11-0 shutout of Mark Czarny at 174.

Brian Cesear (Amherst, Ohio) and Nick Terbay (Dayton, Ohio) then won their matches by forfeit and junior heavyweight Marcus Adelman (Alliance, Ohio) lost a 7-3 decision to ninth-ranked Mike Faust in the day's final match.

"It was a good match for Knapp," Greenlee said about his sophomore from McConnelsville, Ohio. "We wrestled well as a team and that's something to build on. We went out there and had some fun but tomorrow is a whole new day."

The Bobcats travel to Memorial Gymnasium in Charlottesville, Va., on Sunday to face James Madison at noon and host Virginia at 1:30 p.m.
