Ohio State finishes day 2-0 after beating Virginia Tech, 38-10

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio State wrestling team (5-6-0; 0-1-0 Big Ten) recorded its second-consecutive win Sunday against Virginia Tech by winning eight of 10 match-ups for a 38-10 triumph at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va. The Buckeyes benefited from a pair of forfeits by the Hokies and a crucial sudden victory win by sophomore T.J. Enright at 141 pounds. Earlier in the day, Ohio State beat Virginia, 28-10, at Memorial Gymnasium in Charlottesville, Va.

With the Buckeyes and Hokies even at 10-all going into the 141-pound bout, Enright (So., Galloway, Ohio/Westland) was able to snag a 5-3 sudden victory win over No. 14 David Hoffman to help OSU take a 13-10 lead midway through the dual. From that point the Buckeyes never looked back. Prior to Enright's match-up, the Scarlet and Gray had taken a 6-0 advantage in the opening match at 197 because of a Virginia Tech forfeit. However, the Hokies were able to cut into the Buckeye lead at heavyweight when No. 10 Mike Faust beat Josh Bartholomew, (So., Columbus, Ohio/Grandview) 18-9. Up 6-4, OSU's lead became a deficit after the Hokies' Justin Staylor earned his team six points because of a Buckeye forfeit at 125 pounds. Reece Humphrey (Fr., Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) helped Ohio State tie the score when he tallied a 13-1 major decision against Sheridan Moran at 133.

With Virginia taking another forfeit at 149, the Buckeyes went up 19-10 and preceded to earn their fifth dual victory of the year. At 157, Steve Sommer (Sr., West Carrollton, Ohio/Dayton Carroll) notched a 14-5 major decision over Dave Kiley and Nathaniel Augustson (Sr., Rio Rancho, N.M./Rio Rancho) recorded a fall against Tucker Michels at the 3:54 mark in the second period at 165. Blake Maurer (Jr., Evansville, Ind./Mater Dei) and Alex Picazo (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Grandview) completed the Buckeye win, with Maurer scoring a 5-3 decision over Steve Ratley at 174 and Picazo pinning Mark Czarny in 5:57 at 184.

Ohio State returns to St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio, and Big Ten action when it hosts Minnesota Jan. 27 and Illinois Jan. 29. The Buckeyes will meet the Gophers at 7 p.m. and will face the Fighting Illini at 1 p.m.
