The Monarch victory marked the first win over Buffalo since January 23, 2015.
“We wrestled a complete match tonight from all 10 weight classes. Buffalo competes at a very high pace so we had to be ready. We had four overtime matches and we won three of the four so that shows a lot of toughness,†explained head coach Steve Martin.
To start off the match, Michael McGee took Kyle Akins, a returning NCAA qualifier into overtime. McGee won in a tiebreaker with a takedown in the first few seconds.
At 133, Caleb Richardson faced No. 16 Bryan Lantry. The match was tied through two periods. In the final seconds of the third period, Lantry scored a takedown to defeat Richardson.
"Richardson took a multiple NCAA qualifier that was in the All-American round to the final seconds of their match."
Collecting three more points for the Monarchs, Alex Madrigal defeated Jason Estevez by decision at 141.
At 149, junior Kenan Carter collected a decision over Nick Palumbo to extend the Old Dominion lead.
"Madrigal, Carter, and Wright controlled their opponents the entire match and continue to progress each week."
Gathering bonus points for the Monarchs in the 157-pound bout, Larry Early earned a major decision victory over Kobe Garrehy.
In the second match that extended into overtime, Luke Drugac landed a takedown in overtime to defeat Noah Grover in the 165-pound bout.
"Drugac won a match in overtime so that was awesome to see."
At 174, Seldon Wright earned a decision victory over Ryan Kromer for the Monarchs fifth straight win in the dual.
In the 184-pound bout, Antonio Agee and Austin Weigel took their battle into overtime. The Monarch earned a takedown just seconds into the first overtime period. Agee marked the third Monarch to earn a win in overtime and the sixth straight win for Old Dominion.
At 197, John D'Agostino lost his match by decision to Joe Ariola.
In the final bout of the night, Jake Gunning defeated Ali Wahab in three overtime periods.
"Wahab took the conference champion into overtime and lost in the ultimate tiebreaker in the most entertaining mtch of the night. He had opportunities to score, which was nice to see. We now have a short turnaround to compete against American at our Alumni Match. American has beaten two top-25 teams in UNC and Duke. This will be another battle we will have to rebound for."
