    Northern Iowa team awards: Fay, Baima 'Most Valuable

    The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team wrapped up the 2006-07 season with its annual awards banquet on Sat., April 14, in the UNI Commons Ballroom.

    UNI finished the season with a dual mark of 7-9-1 and qualified six wrestlers for the NCAA Championships. The Panthers also captured the first Western Wrestling Conference dual and tournament championships. UNI was a perfect 4-0 in league dual action. The Panthers then finished off the WWC season by winning the NCAA West Regional/WWC title. The regional win marked the 22nd straight regional crown for the Panthers.

    Senior Nick Baima (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and sophomore Moza Fay (Anamosa, Iowa) were named the Most Valuable Wrestlers at the banquet. Baima also captured the Lyle E. Schwarzenbach Award for academics. Fay was also given the Most Improved Award.

    Senior Ryan Osgood (Mason City, Iowa) earned the Chuck Patten Award for leadership. Senior Colby Goetsch (Ankeny, Iowa) was awarded the McCready/Steffensmeier Award for leadership.

    Junior Alex Dolly (Mishawaka, Ind.) was given the Most Courageous Award after returning from neck surgery last season. Dolly was a national qualifier in the 174-pound weight class.

    Redshirt freshman Kyle Anson (Iowa City, Iowa) captured the Rookie Award. Anson went 25-10 for the Panthers this season and was also named the Western Wrestling Conference Freshman of the Year. Anson won the 133-pound title at the West Regional and qualified for the NCAA Championships.

    True freshman Caleb Flores (Rosemead, Calif.) was given the Redshirt Award.

    UNI's five seniors were also recognized by head coach Brad Penrith and the rest of the UNI coaching staff.
