This marks the Bears' first Big 12 dual of the season, and third straight dual win over Utah Valley.
Utah Valley was ranked as the No. 20 ranked Mid Major program in the country.
The afternoon started at 141 lbs., with No. 25 Timmy Box taking on Trevor Wilson. Box wasted no time, as he took down Wilson with a slick ankle pick a mere 20 seconds into the match. After Wilson escaped, Box registered another takedown and held a 4-1 lead with 2:01 of riding time heading into the second period.
It was more of the same in the second and third periods, as Box took Wilson down three more times to coast to a 10-2 major decision, giving the Bears a 4-0 lead to start the dual.
[149] Ben Polkowske came out with an aggressive mentality as well, taking down LaMont in the first minute of the match. After a LaMont escape and takedown on Polkowske, Polkowske responded with a reversal to tie the match up at 4-4 after the first period.
To start the second, Polkowske chose bottom and eventually reversed LaMont one minute into the second period. With a 6-5 lead heading into the third period, Polkowske started on top as LaMont chose bottom.
LaMont escaped twenty seconds into the third period, tying the match up at 6-6. With savvy defensive wrestling, Polkowske locked LaMont up in a cradle off of LaMont's shot and racked up four points of near fall, in addition to a takedown. Polkowske won via decision 13-6.
At 157 lbs., true freshman Jimmy Fate grabbed a takedown less than a minute into the match against Raider Lofthouse. Fate established dominance on top, amassing 2:00 of riding time in the first period, with a 2-1 lead.
The second period offered much of the same, as Fate snagged another takedown and dominated the period with excellent work on top. Fate entered the third period leading 4-2.
Fate chose bottom to start the third period, and escaped quickly. Fate grabbed yet another takedown, and immediately went back to work on top. In what was a heroic and dominant performance by Fate, he won his first career dual match as a Bear via decision 8-5.
This pushed Northern Colorado's lead to 10-0 over Utah Valley.
No. 22 Keilan Torres continued his reign of terror this season, as he pinned Koy Wilkinson in 31 seconds. Torres also grabbed the fastest takedown of the year for the Bears, with an ankle pick 2 seconds into the match.
After the pin by Torres, the Bears saw their biggest lead of the season at 16-0.
At 174 lbs., Tanner Davis took on No. 21 Kimball Bastian. Davis competed hard, but dropped the bout by a score of 10-1.
[184] Dylan Gabel restored the roar for the Bears, taking down his opponent Will Sumner in the first 30 seconds of the match.
After a dominant first period, Gabel chose bottom and escaped to push his lead to 3-0. Gabel tacked on another takedown in the second, watching his lead grow to 5-0 after the second period.
Sumner chose bottom to start the third period, and escaped. This did not faze Gabel, as he secured another takedown. With 3:41 of riding time, Gabel won via decision 8-2.
The Bears led 19-4 after Gabel's win.
True freshman Jamarcus Grant wrestled yet another ranked opponent in No. 17 Tanner Orndorff. Grant once again displayed tremendous amounts of heart and effort, but eventually lost 15-3 to the ranked foe.
Coming off his first career dual win as a Bear earlier this week against Wyoming, [285] Jack Kuck came out fired up against Jordan Karst. After a scoreless first period, Karst snagged an escape and a takedown in the second period to lead 3-0 heading into the third period.
Kuck chose neutral to start the third period, and took down Karst and immediately cut him in an attempt to tie the match, but fell short losing via decision 4-2.
At 125 lbs., Trey Andrews wrestled against Mitch Brown. It was a rocky start to the match for Andrews, as Brown threw Andrews to his back twice and fell to an 8-2 deficit.
Brown chose bottom to start the second period, and rode Brown for the entire period.
Andrews chose bottom in the third period, and escaped to bring the score to 8-3. With a riding time point, Andrews lost 8-4 to Brown.
With the score at 19-14, Montoya took the mat for the Bears in the final bout of the afternoon against No. 33 Jarod Maynes.
Montoya gave his best Mariana Rivera impersonation, as he closed out the dual for the Bears with a barrage of takedowns and a reversal. Montoya cruised to a 9-5 victory, which sealed the deal for the Bears against Utah Valley.
This marks the fourth straight dual win for Montoya.
Northern Colorado ultimately defeated Utah Valley 22-14.
