"I think we made huge advancements from last week," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "We're definitely moving in the right direction. For Tanner Davis to go out and get the win like he did for us is huge; I think it really shifted the momentum of the dual in our favor and got us back on track."
The Bears won six of the ten matches, with the dual decision coming at heavyweight after a 19-19 tie up in team points following the 197 pound match.
True freshman Rico Montoya picked up bonus points early for the Bears to put them in the lead, earning a technical fall over Jason DelaCruz, 17-0. Montoya picked up a takedown 17 seconds into the match, and continued his domination, picking up a four-point nearfall a minute later. Starting in the offensive position to start the second, Montoya tacked on another six points, earning a nearfall eleven seconds in, and another four to close out the period. A quick escape and a takedown set Montoya up for the tech fall, and he secured it with just a minute to go in the match with yet another 4-point nearfall.
Timmy Box earned his third straight dual win on the season, taking down Joshy Cortez, 7-4. Box earned two takedowns in the first period and would add another in the second following a quick escape after choosing the down position. His win closed the team score gap, making it 9-8 in Cal Poly's favor going into the fifth match of the night.
Redshirt sophomore Keilan Torres got his first win as an attached Bear wrestler and first dual win of his career after a 10-0 major decision win over Xavier Johnson. Torres got his first takedown of the match nearly a minute and a half in, and would secure a four-point nearfall 45 seconds later to make it 6-0 in his favor. Choosing down to start the second period, his lead would increase by one following an escape after just five seconds. Another takedown near the end of the second would make it 9-0, and after a non-scoring third period and a plus one for riding time, Torres would tack on four points to the overall team score, making it 15-12, Mustangs.
Tanner Davis followed suit at 174 pounds, also earning the first dual win of his career after a hard fought match against Sohrab Movahedi. Davis picked up two takedowns in the first period, adding an escape point in the second to make it 5-1 going into the final period. Movahedi earned his own escape and takedown to kick off the third, and another takedown after Davis' escape to tie the match at six points apiece. A quick escape for Davis with only eleven seconds to go in the match, as well as a riding time advantage point, would make it 8-6, giving the Bears another three team points to tie the dual at 15-15.
Following a major decision loss at 184 pounds, Trent Noon made up the ground to earn the major for the Bears, defeating J.T. Goodwin 10-1. Noon was the lone scorer of the match for the first t six minutes, only giving up an escape with 42 seconds left in the third period. He earned three takedowns, an escape, and a four-point nearfall throughout the match to secure the win and leave the dual tied 19-19, handing the reigns to UNC heavyweight Brian Macchione.
In only his second match of the season, Macchione put up a massive fight to earn a win for the team. A takedown with 30 seconds left in the first period put him up 2-0, and a second stall call on his opponent, Spencer Empey in the second period left it 3-0 going into the final two minutes of the match. After picking up the riding time advantage, and an escape with 13 seconds to go in the third, Macchione secured his own decision win 6-3, as well as the dual win for the UNC squad, 22-19.
"Brian is a very savvy, very smart wrestler. He knows what ever situation is -- in the first period he gave up the stall call instead of the escape -- that's him being mat savvy. He's a real student of the sport and he finds ways to win -- he finds a way to be our hero, and he did that tonight."
The Bears have the rest of the weekend off, and will take to the road next week for a pair of duals against Boise State and Oregon State.
