The difference in the match was Tyler Kinn's major decision victory, followed by No. 19 Keilan Torres fall that pushed UNC ahead of Cal Poly for good.
The dual started in the 184 lb weight class as No. 15 Dylan Gabel faced off against Sohrab Movahedi. Gabel scored a quick takedown on Movahedi for a 2-0 lead after the first period. Gabel extended his lead in the third period with two more takedowns. Riding time gave Gabel a 9-1 major decision victory and UNC started with a 4-0 lead.
Tanner Davis was next up for UNC in the 197 lb weight class and met Tom Lane. After the first period, Lane had a 10-0 lead with two, two-point near falls, a four-point near fall, and a takedown. Davis had difficulty staying in the match and Lane added another two-point near fall in the second period. Lane dropped Davis 15-0 by technical fall and Cal Poly jumped ahead 5-4.
Robert Winters Jr. went up against Spencer Empey in the heavyweight class and the pair were scoreless after the first period. Empey managed to get an escape in the second period to lead Winters Jr. 1-0. Winters Jr. tied it up in the third with an escape and the match went to overtime. With :19 seconds left in overtime, Winters Jr. had a takedown of Empey for a 3-1 sudden victory. UNC was back in front with a 7-5 advantage over the Mustangs.
In the 125 lb weight class, Sean Cannon looked to extend UNC's lead against Yoshito Funakoshi. The match was tied at two after the first period with Cannon earning an escape and a penalty point. The second period started with Cannon getting a takedown on Funakoshi and a 3-2 lead. The lead did not last long as Funakoshi scored his own takedown. Cannon managed to tie it up again with a penalty, but Funakoshi had an escape right after to pick up the 5-4 decision win. Cal Poly retook the lead 8-7.
Now in the 133 lb weight class, Rico Montoya battled Ty Schilling and scored an early takedown to grab the lead in the first period. Montoya established himself in the second period with three takedowns and a reversal for a 10-3 lead over Schilling. Three more takedowns in the third period, plus riding time was enough for Montoya to earned 17-6 major decision victory over Schilling and UNC now lead 11-8 in the dual heading into the intermission.
The dual resumed in the 141 lb weight class with Benjamin Polkowske meeting Colton Schilling. Polkowske had the advantage early with a takedown and a four-point near fall for a 6-0 lead. Schilling fought back with a reversal and his own four-point near fall to tie the match at six. Schilling would get a two-point and four-point near fall, before finally pinning Polkowske at 2:24. Cal Poly now had a 14-11 over UNC.
Jimmy Fate went against Joshy Cortez in the 149 lb weight class and Cortez raced ahead in the first with a pair of takedowns on Fate. Cortez extended the lead in the second period with an escape and added riding time in the third for a 6-2 decision win over Fate. The Mustangs lead grew to 17-11.
Tyler Kinn went for the Bears in the 157 lb weight class, looking for a win after a tough stretch of matches. He would face Jett Moy and Kinn earned a 2-1 lead after a takedown in the first period. Moy tied the match at two with an escape, and Kinn added another takedown for a 4-2 advantage. In the third period, Kinn had two, take downs and an escape for a 10-3 lead. With riding time, Kinn managed an 11-3 major decision victory over Moy and UNC closed the gap on Cal Poly at 17-15.
With a chance to take the lead in the dual, UNC was in the best situation with Keilan Torres in the 165 lb weight class against Ryan Farina. Torres had a takedown of Farina in the first period for an early 2-0 lead, but the match would not need another period. Torres managed to pin Farina with six seconds left in the first and UNC found themselves with a 21-17 lead.
Now with the lead, all Sethan Bogulski needed to do in the 174 lb weight class was stop Cal Poly's Matt Wilhelm from scoring any bonus points. Bogulski was up to the task and stayed close to Wilhelm in the first period, only trailing 1-2. Wilhelm earned an escape in the second period, but the damage was limited to that and Boulgski was still in a safe position. Despite an early takedown that gave Wilhlem a 5-1 advantage, Bogulski managed to get an escape and Wilhlem defeated him 5-2 by decision. \
UNC had rallied from a 17-11 deficit to squeak out a 21-20 dual victory over Cal Poly. Both teams had a fall in the dual, but the Bears managed to win three matches by major decision and held the Mustangs only other bonus points to a tech fall.

"I think getting the first takedown is huge because it sets the tone. The first takedown allows you to wrestle the match at your pace and start out with two points. I put my hips out and got in the leg right away and it happened so fast that I got the reversal instead of the escape which was big."
Keilan Torres
"I pinned him in a tilt. I think he just kind of laid there to honest. I tightened it up and just made sure that it was tight and he couldn't move. I knew what it was going to do for the team score so I went out there trying to get the pin. I envisioned it happening that way. This team is my family and to put us ahead means a lot to me."

"It's been a long losing streak for sure. I have been looking for this win and training for it for sure. I always try to go out there and push the pace regardless of the score and I felt him starting to break under the pressure. I wanted to keep pushing the pace and stay heavy on his head. I knew it was go time and trying to get those bonus points and looking for my shots."

"I think tonight was the perfect example of dual meet wrestling. I think these guys wrestled for each other as a team. Those bonus points were huge and that's what it came down to. We split five-five, half the guys wrestled pretty well and the other not so much. I appreciate a guy like Seth Bogulski so much. I think he is in a position to win the match himself. But he understands where the team score is at and he made a sacrifice tonight. I think he beats him later in the year. Guys like Tyler Kinn, that was a big match for him. I knew Keilan would get the pin. Dylan and Rico, I expect them to step up. It was nice to see a guy like Robert Winters step up."

There is little time to rest for Northern Colorado, as they depart tomorrow for Norman to take on Oklahoma in a Big 12 dual. The dual will be held on Sunday, January 21 at 2 pm MT.
