Northern Colorado earns comeback win over Cal Poly

GREELEY, Colo. -- Trey Andrews found himself at the end of the order against Sunday's PAC-12 opponent Cal Poly, an unfamiliar place for the 125-pouder. Nevertheless, he intended on ending the dual the same way he normally begins them: with a victory.

Andrews' 6-2 decision against Cal Poly senior Britain Longmire gave Northern Colorado a 19-17 victory in exciting fashion.

After Northern Colorado's Cole Briegel (Burlington) lost 6-4 in SV1, the Mustangs led 17-13 with two matches remaining. Henry Chirino (Brandon, Fla.) got three points back for the Bears with an 8-4 decision. It was then time for Andrews (Safford, Ariz.) to put it away.

Andrews and Britain labored through a scoreless first period, and Andrews led 1-0 after the second via an escape. Andrews logged a two-point nearfall, an escape and a takedown in the final period to bring the Bears to victory.

"I was very glad the dual came down to those two guys at the end," head coach Ben Cherrington said of Chirino and Andrews. "They've been very consistent all year long.

Cal Poly's Devon Lotito pinned Sonny Espinoza (Pueblo) in 1:04 to start the dual in the 131-pound match, but Northern Colorado's Nick Adams (Monument) responded with a 6-4 decision against Jacob Leon to get three points back in the 141 match.

Beau Roberts (Boise) then suffered a 15-6 major decision loss to Kyle Chene in the 149-pound bout.

At 157 pounds, Michell Polkowske (LaJara) then gathered four points for the Bears thanks to a 15-1 major decision against Luke McDonald. Polkowske benefitted from three takedowns, two nearfalls, a reversal and a riding-time point. He logged 2:11 of riding time after one period, 3:32 after the second and ended with 5:09.

Charlie McMartin (Boise) tied the match at 10 with a 7-2 decision against Travis Berridge, but the Mustangs retook the lead in the 174-pound match as Dominic Kastl recorded a15-5 major decision against Josh Van Tine (Broomfield).

"It took a little while to figure the kid out, but when (McMartin) saw an opening, he nailed him," Cherrington said. "He built his lead, he was excited and I really believe that win carried us through the dual. The emotions were high and guys were excited after that."

Trailing 14-10, Nick Bayer (Maple Valley, Wash.) earned at 10-3 decision against Sean Dougherty. Briegel lost the next bout, setting the stage for Chirino and Andrews.

"We have one more tough PAC-12 dual next Friday at Boise and then we move into our conference schedule," Cherrington said. "From here on out, every match is going to be tough. Our conference has grown immensely, and every team has gotten better, and we're one of those teams. It's my hope that these guys take some belief from these last two matches, winning two duals against PAC-12 schools. That's a big deal for us."

The Bears will face the Broncos of Boise State -- Cherrington's alma mater -- at 7 p.m. Friday in Boise.
