    North Dakota State defeats Fresno State, California Baptist

    RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Owen Pentz recorded a pair of victories, including a pin in the first period of his first collegiate match, to help propel the North Dakota State wrestling team to a pair of victories against Fresno State 29-15 and California Baptist 30-6 on Saturday, Jan. 30th, in the Van Dyne Gym.

    Pentz, the freshman transfer from Fresno State, made quick work in his first match at 197 pounds defeating his former school in 2 minutes, 9 seconds.

    In his second bout against CBU, Pentz built a 6-0 first period lead and went on to win 10-5, giving the Bison a commanding lead with both victories.

    NDSU (4-2) won six of 10 matches against Fresno State, including a pin by Brandon Metz at 2:11 to end the match. It was the first pin of the season for Metz and the 12th of his career.

    After three straight victories to start the match for Fresno State, 149 Jaden Van Maanen put the Bison on the board with a 3-0 victory. No. 13-ranked 157 Jared Franek kept it rolling winning by 15-4 major decision to bring the Bison within five.

    Following Franek's win at 157, the Bison took the lead with a win by forfeit at 165 followed by 174 Riley Habisch recording his first victory as a Bison, a 12-4 major decision. The Bulldogs claimed a victory at 184 before Pentz and Metz put the match away with back-to-back pins.

    The Bison won eight of 10 bouts against CBU, including two tech falls and three major decisions to rout the Lancers. After falling behind 3-0 to start the match, the Bison charged forward on the strength of six straight victories to help seal the victory.

    Kellyn March got the scoring started winning by tech fall at 133 and Dylan Droegemueller added a 13-6 decision at 141 pounds to to give the Bison momentum.

    Van Maanen kept it rolling with a 4-0 decision before Franek put on a clinic at 157 pounds winning by tech fall, 20-4. Weber and Habisch added major decisions to put the match out of reach.

    Six Bison went 2-0 on the day, with Van Maanen, Franek, Weber, Habisch, and Metz joining Pentz with undefeated weekends.

    North Dakota State is back home next week for two duals on Sunday, Feb. 7, against South Dakota State and Iowa State. The first match is scheduled for 11 a.m.
