North Carolina rallies to tie North Carolina State

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Trailing by 12 points after six bouts, North Carolina rallied for four straight wins to force a 16-16 draw with rival NC State Friday in Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling action at Carmichael Auditorium. Junior heavyweight Spencer Nadolsky capped the comeback with his 17th consecutive victory, a 3-1 win over the Wolfpack's Jainor Palma in the final bout of the night.

Trailing 16-4 after dropping five of the first six matches, Carolina started its rally with a win from sophomore Alex Maciag at 174 pounds. Macaig, now 19-11, posted a first-period takedown and held on for a 4-2 victory over the Pack's Rick Brownlee.

Classmate Justin Dobies followed with a key come-from-behind overtime win over State's Jeremy Colbert at 184 that kept the rally alive. Dobies trailed 5-3 but scored a takedown with two seconds remaining in regulation to send the bout to overtime, where he won it with a sudden victory takedown. Dobies is now 22-9.

Junior David Dashiell won a third straight bout for the Tar Heels with an 8-3 decision over 13th-ranked Ryan Goodman at 197. Dashiell, who improved his mark to 28-8 on the season, notched two takedowns - one in the third period - and tacked on a point for riding time for the final margin.

The three straight wins by Maciag, Dobies and Dashiell set the stage for Nadolsky, who picked a third-period escape and added the riding time point to post a 3-1 decision over Palma. Ranked No. 13 nationally, Nadolsky has not dropped a match since the Nov. 26 Carolina Open and is now 31-2 on the season, including a 15-0 mark in duals.

NC State won five of the first six bouts on the night to jump out to the 16-4 advantage. Redshirt freshman Vincent Ramirez provided the lone Carolina victory over this stretch with a 9-0 major decision win over Jalil Dozier at 141 pounds. Ramirez, now 28-6 on the season, scored a takedown late in the third period to secure the major decision and trim the Pack lead to 6-4. NC State would go on to win the next three bouts to jump out to the 12-point advantage.

The Pack took a 6-0 lead with decisions by Jeremy Hartrum over Bobby Shaw at 125 and Garrett Cummings over Jared Royer at 133. Hartrum scored a sudden victory takedown in overtime to post a 3-1 win over Shaw, while Cummings notched four takedowns en route to a 10-3 win over Royer.

Following the Ramirez victory, State got back into the win column at 149 with a 9-4 decision by Joe Carmanica over Chris Ramos and followed with four points at 157, where Kody Hamrah claimed a 16-6 major decision over the Tar Heels' Brian Baglio. Pack freshman Obie Simpson then took 20th-ranked Garrett Atkinson to overtime at 165 and emerged with a 4-3 win on a takedown in the third extra period.

The tie was the first for Carolina since a 17-17 draw with fourth-ranked Michigan State in 1996.

The Tar Heels return to action with two duals Saturday at Carmichael. Carolina hosts No. 25 Penn at 2 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. meeting against The Citadel.
