No. 28 Bettendorf claims title at Keith Young Invitational

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Many of the Hawkeye State's best prep wrestlers, and a pair of the elite teams in Iowa convened at Cedar Falls High School on Saturday for the Keith Young Invitational. Headed into the medal round matches, No. 28 Bettendorf and No. 31 Waverly-Shell Rock were tied with 185 points each. Both teams had six going for first -- Bettendorf had nine total placers, even with returning state placer Raekwon Jefferson out of the lineup, while Waverly-Shell Rock had ten.

Momentum started not on the side of Bettendorf as Cadet freestyle All-American Jack Wagner was upset by Brenden Baker of Cedar Rapids Jefferson by 4-2 at 106 pounds. However, the Bulldogs answered back with wins in the next two first place matches: sophomore Jacob Schwarm earned a pin, while sophomore Paul Glynn scored a 6-3 decision.

Further building the momentum, and providing Bettendorf with the necessary points to win the tournament, would be three consecutive championships at 138 to 152 from their trio of returning state champions. Fredy Stroker earned a pin at 138 pounds, Logan Ryan scored a 5-3 decision over Bryce Steiert of Waverly-Shell Rock in a rematch of high state finals victory, and Jacob Woodard came through with an 8-4 decision.

Waverly-Shell Rock produced a pair of champions in seniors Spencer Derifield and Kaleb Staack at 160 and 285 pounds respectively. However, the four championship finals losses proved to be costly to the Go-Hawks in terms of the team race on Saturday.

The other team to produce multiple champions on Saturday at the Keith Young was Waterloo West, as defending state champion Marcus Harrington won the 195 pound weight class, while returning state runner-up Kyler Matthews came through with a title at 220 pounds.
