    No. 2 Concordia handles Jamestown

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- No.2-ranked Concordia turned to its "next generation" to come up with key individual wins in a wire-to-wire win against the University of Jamestown. For the second straight home dual meet the Cobbers won eight of the 10 individual matches in posting a 30-12 victory over the Jimmies.

The victory pushes Concordia's dual-meet record to 11-2 on the season. The 11 dual-meet wins is the most since the 2010-11 season and is one shy of the school record of 12 set back in 2009-10. Jamestown loses for the third straight dual meet and is now 3-5 on the season.

Concordia won the first three individual bouts of the match with the biggest victory coming at 141 by Will McCarthy. Freshman Richard Soto started the dual by coming away with an 11-4 decision at 125. Soto finished with a flurry of points to get the seven-point victory. Gabe Foltz then earned a forfeit win at 133 to up his season record to 14-9.

McCarthy followed Foltz and recorded the most dramatic victory of the night. He erased a three-point deficit in the third period and won 10-8. McCarthy entered the final period trailing 7-4 but then came up with six points to grab his sixth win of the year. It was McCarthy's first individual match since Dec. 21.

"I was just taking it one point at a time, commented McCarthy. "I was trying to hang in there and keep it close. I had a feeling I would be able to outlast him."

The Jimmies came up with one of their two pin falls on the night and then the Cobbers rattled off four straight individual wins to seal the victory by gaining a 27-6 lead in the match.

Ben Cousins, Brandon Haluptzok, Sebastian Gardner and Chris Harrison all earned points for CC. Cousins, another one of the "next generation" Cobbers, won 4-0 at 157 and once again came up with the decisive points in the third period.

McCarthy was asked about the team's ability to win in the third and remarked, "I know our conditioning is pretty tough so I [the team] was banking on that."

Haluptzok earned a third-period victory when he hung on and won 4-3 at 165. It was only Haluptzok's sixth match of the season and he evened his record at 3-3. Gardner won his match at 174 in the second period when he earned a couple of escapes to take a two-point lead and then added one more in the third to win 6-3. Gardner is 18-10 on the year and has won six of his last nine matches. Harrison recorded Concordia's second forfeit win of the night and is now 19-5. He is the fifth member of the Cobbers to win 19 matches this season.

Freshman Justice Davis finished off the match with a 3-2 win at 285. It marked bookend wins for CC freshmen. Davis got an escape in the final 20 seconds of his bout and earned a 3-2 victory. Davis picked up his fifth win on the year.

Concordia will turn its attention to another national-caliber dual-format invitational. The Cobbers will participate in the Border Brawl Duals hosted by UW-Whitewater on Saturday, Jan. 25. CC face UW-Stevens Point in the first round and then square off against No.9-ranked Olivet in the second round.
