To open the dual meet, St. Edward earned a pin and major decision to take a 10-0 lead. At 126 pounds, St. Edward sophomore Isaac Collier came through with a fall at the 5:36 mark against Shamrocks' reserve Chyle Johnson; two-time third in the state Trevor Zdebski was out with an injury. Then, fellow Eagles sophomore Hunter Ladnier came through with a 9-1 major decision against returning state qualifier Evan Toth.
Next in the dual meet came six successive wins for Detroit Catholic Central to flip the 10-0 deficit into a 31-10 lead. That stretch started with a pin from junior Myles Amine, a returning state placer, at the 5:20 mark against Joey Ciacchi. It continued with an unexpectedly close match as returning state champion Malik Amine needed a takedown with five seconds left in the match to upend senior Ray Barr, who was down three weights from where he competed in last year's state series for St. Edward, by a 4-3 score.
Senior Nick Bennett, who is ranked No. 15 in the nation, continued the barrage with a pin in 5:21 at 152 pounds against sophomore Matt Pauvlik. Freshman Tyler Morland, who was on the Shamrocks football team that lost in the state final last week, followed it up with a 15-4 major decision against Adam Wukie at 160 pounds.
With St. Edward short-handed in the upper-weights due to their football team's run in the state tournament ending in the semifinals last week, they forfeited the 170-pound weight class; Andrew Garcia, a two-time state champion who is ranked nationally took the outcome. The Eagles bumped senior Kevin Khoma to wrestle at 182 pounds against the nationally ranked Logan Marcicki, a Junior freestyle All-American this past summer; however, Marcicki got the pin in 1:56.
Finally, St. Edward ended the Detroit Catholic Central barrage with a win at 195 pounds from returning state qualifier Gabe Dzuro. Dzuro, who weighed in at 182 pounds, bounced back from giving up the first takedown to win 6-4 against Nick Giese on a late third period takedown. Giese placed third at state last year, and like Morland was placing football for the Shamrocks last Saturday.
The Shamrocks then got their final points of the day in a pin from senior Jimmy Russell, a returning state qualifier. He scored a win by fall at the 3:15 mark against sophomore Mike O'Malley, who will be at 195 going forward and was on that St. Edward football team which was eliminated last week. The dual meet score was 37-13 for Detroit Catholic Central with four weights left, and then things got interesting to say the least.
In the heavyweight match, both teams had backup wrestlers, as the normal starters were football players. St. Edward sent out sophomore Kevin Ward, while the Shamrocks inserted Nick Vaiketcus. Ward got the match's first takedown, and then a minute into the match, the match stopped. Due to an Ohio-specific rule, Vaiketcus was actually not eligible to wrestle in the 285 pound class; he weighed more than 195 but less than 215, and 215 is the Ohio minimum to wrestle 285. The match was ruled a forfeit, like it never happened.
Freshman Allan Hart cut the St. Edward deficit another six points with a pin 32 seconds into the match against junior Alex Geelhood, who will be the starter until Aaron Rehfeldt is available in January. Then it was junior L.J. Bentley setting up the potential for last match heroics from St. Edward, with a pin at the 5:50 mark against Tommy Hermann. This came in a match where the primary objective in the last four minutes plus for Hermann was not to get pinned. It was 18-4 before the pinning combination took place.
Facing a 37-31 deficit, St. Edward sent out sophomore Mason Daugherty to face senior Parker O'Brien, who made the state tournament last year for Detroit Catholic Central. Daugherty scored a takedown in the opening period, and rode it out on top. In the second period, O'Brien chose down, Daugherty got a two-point near fall and two more points out of three bottom stall calls on O'Brien.
With a pin being the requisite outcome for St. Edward, and not getting pinned the goal for the Shamrocks, Daugherty chose the top position in the third period. He rode hard seeking that outcome. Midway through the third period, a fourth stalling was called. Then with eight seconds left in the match, a fifth stalling was called against O'Brien, which meant a win by disqualification.
That led to the match's true drama, the determination of a winner through match criteria. There was nothing in categories A, B, or C: those addressing misconducts and deductions. Criterion D through G was even as well: five pins each, no technical fall victories, one major decision each, one decision each. Criteria H was even at 12-all, as the first match points at 285 did not count, match never happened. Finally, it came down to Criteria I; St. Edward had 15 near fall points across the dual meet, but Detroit Catholic Central had 23.
Detroit Catholic Central returns to competition on Wednesday afternoon with an assembly dual at home against No. 20 Davison, Mich., while St. Edward next competes on Friday and Saturday at the Walsh Ironman.
