Nine Stanford wrestlers go undefeated at Menlo Open

Menlo Park, Calif. -- The Stanford wrestling team got an early start to its season today, with 19 team members competing at the Menlo Open at Haynes Prim Pavilion on the Menlo College campus. Nine Cardinal wrestlers went undefeated in the pool tournament to get a successful head start on the season.

The tournament was structured in pools of three, four or five wrestlers. Four Stanford freshmen, Nick Amuchastegui, Max Rosefigura, Murdoch Miller and Matt Winterbourne, went undefeated on their first day of collegiate action. Redshirt freshmen Justin Paulsen and Lucas Espericueta also went undefeated, as did sophomores Jake Johnson and Peter Miller. Senior captain Phillip Doerner also completed the day with a perfect record.

"I was excited to have us get some competition outside the wrestling room," said Head Coach Kerry McCoy. "Our freshmen got an opportunity to see their strengths and weaknesses and we got a good chance to see what we need to work on. This gives us some great momentum going into next week."

The team will head to Tecumseh, Kans. next week for its first dual, meeting Fort Hays State on Friday.
