    Newberry edges UNC Pembroke

NEWBERRY -- The Newberry Wolves and UNC Pembroke Braves were tied in Tuesday's dual with only two bouts remaining, but Newberry's Huston Evans sent the Eleazer Arena crowd into a frenzy with a pin in the first period to clinch an 18-15 win for the Wolves.

Newberry moves to 10-3 on the season with only one dual left on the schedule, as the Wolves host Anderson on Senior Night at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 17. UNC Pembroke falls to 12-4 on the year and has a five-match winning streak snapped.

The dual was projected to be a tight one, as the Braves came into the match as the top ranked team in the Super Region Two Coaches' Poll, with the Wolves ranked second.

Remarkably, nine of the 10 bouts were decisions, including the first eight in a row. The scene was set for tense moments as a win by criteria was on the cards.

Evans simply put those thoughts far out of everyone's minds. With two big throws of Stuart Nadeau - including the second one straight to the Brave's back - Evans roared to a pin in just 52 seconds. He is now 7-0 on the season, with his last two wins by fall.

Newberry opened the dual with a 10-5 decision by Trung Duong (Lynchburg, Va.) at 125 lbs. and a 5-0 decision at 133 lbs. by Jordan Simpson (Oxford, Ala.). UNCP's No. 2 Daniel Ownbey held a big lead going into the third period at 141 lbs., but Nick Lankford (Braselton, Ga.) was able to get nearfall points and limit the match to a 13-10 decision, putting the Wolves' team lead at 6-3 after three bouts.

Senior Seiji Borja (North Charleston, S.C.) picked up his 100th career victory at 149 lbs. with a 7-4 decision over Hayden Fry, making Newberry's lead 9-3. From there, Pembroke rattled off three wins in a row, taking the lead at 12-9 after 174 lbs.

Jared Holliday (Burlington, N.J.) earned an 8-3 win by decision at 184 lbs., tying the dual with two bouts to go.

Evans' pin put Newberry up by six and heavyweight Cody Brundage (Chapin, S.C.) battled nationally-ranked Chris Giddens into overtime before dropping a decision, but sealing the Wolves win.

Newberry is now 9-2 all-time against UNC Pembroke and avenges last year's upset defeat to the Braves.
