Navy defeats Lehigh for first time since 2011

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- On a night in which nine of the 10 bouts were decided by three points or less, Navy found a way to win most of the close ones. No. 18 Lehigh raced out to an early 6-0 lead before the Mids rallied to win seven of the final eight bouts to top the Mountain Hawks 21-9 Saturday night at Alumni Hall.

A one-point win at 157 and a 2-0 decision at 165 helped Navy to its first win over Lehigh since 2011. The loss for the Mountain Hawks (0-2) snaps a nine-dual win streak in the series. Lehigh still maintains a 53-48 lead after Saturday's 101st meeting. Navy moves to 2-1 with the victory.

Lehigh used strong work in the top position to take the first two bouts without the benefit of a takedown. At 125, junior Jaret Lane worked an escape after being ridden for the first 1:15 of the second period and then answered by riding out Logan Treaster in the third to win 1-0.

Freshman Malyke Hines followed by riding out the second period in his match at 133 against Jacob Allen and added an escape early in the third period to win 2-0.

At 141, freshman Connor McGonagle picked up Lehigh's first takedown of the dual and led Navy captain Cody Trybus 2-1 after the first period, but Trybus answered with an escape, a takedown and a strong ride in the second period and went on to win 5-3 to put Navy on the scoreboard.

The Mids evened things up after 149 as Casey Cobb scored a first period takedown and added a counter takedown late on a desperation attempt by junior Jimmy H0offman as Cobb prevailed 5-2.

The wildest bout of the dual came at 157 where sophomore AJ Burkhart made his first-ever dual appearance against Andrew Cerniglia. After a scoreless first period, Burkhart was turned for two near fall points early in the second period before reversing Cerniglia onto his back for two-plus-four. Cerniglia reversed back before a Burkhart escape put him up 7-4 after two periods. Cerniglia reversed to open the third period, gained riding time advantage and after a Burkhart escape scored the decisive takedown with 25 seconds left and kept Burkhart down to win 9-8 and give the Mids the lead.

Eighth-ranked Tanner Skidgel made it four straight wins for Navy with a 2-0 decision over Brian Meyer at 165. Skidgel escaped in the second period and rode out the third.

Freshman Jake Logan stopped the Navy run with a 7-4 decision over Drew Caravela at 174. Logan scored a takedown in each period plus a third period escape.

Navy's David Key won a battle of true freshmen against Lehigh's JT Davis at 184 by a 5-2 decision. Key scored a second period takedown to lead 3-1 after two and countered a Davis attempt late.

The Midshipmen clinched their first win over Lehigh in 10 years at 197 as Jacob Koser defeated senior Jake Jakobsen 6-1. Koser scored a first period takedown and countered strong rides by Jakobsen in both the second and third periods with reversals.

In the final bout of the dual, junior heavyweight Victor Lacombe dropped a 3-1 decision to Navy's John Birchmeier.

The dual itself featured just 12 combined takedowns, with Navy holding an 8-4 edge. The Mids led 4-1 in reversals, while each side had one near fall, Lehigh's a four-pointer and Navy's a two-pointer. Six of the 10 bouts saw no scoring in the opening three minutes.

Lehigh and Navy also wrestled 21 extra matches Saturday evening, the results of which count towards a wrestler's season record. Mountain Hawk wrestlers won eight of those matches, with Hines and Logan winning their second bouts of the evening. Hoffman, Burkhart and Davis also picked up victories after losing in the dual. Freshmen Manzona Bryant IV (149), Connor Herceg (174) and Caden Wright (184) notched Lehigh's other three victories. Bryant and freshman Steven Storm wrestled their first official bouts for the Brown and White.

The Mountain Hawks will host Drexel on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The dual will be televised locally on Service Electric Network and streamed at Lehighsports.com/watch.
