With the meet starting at 141 pounds, UIU got off to a fast start. Jacob Pedersen defeated returning All-American Ben Keen 8-7. Pedersen scored a reversal in the closing seconds of the match to escape with the victory.
After Peter Hayes picked up a 5-2 win for MSU Moorhead at 149 pounds, the Peacocks received some more late-match magic. Trailing 5-3 in the closing seconds at 157 pounds, UIU's Brandon Heying pulled off a reversal in the final 30 seconds to force overtime. In the extra session, Heying earned a quick takedown for the win and a 6-3 UIU dual meet lead.
Top-ranked 165-pounder Nate Baker gave the Dragons a 9-6 lead following a win by fall at 3:58. UIU's C.J. MacNaught knotted the meet at 9-9 with a 9-7 win at 174 pounds. MacNaught is ranked fourth in the nation in his weight class.
MSU Moorhead then pulled away with three straight victories. Bryan Cowdan picked up a 9-4 win at 184 pounds and Josiah Bush followed by a win via fall in 1:36 at 197 pounds. In a match featuring two nationally-ranked competitors, MSU Moorhead's Chris Tuchscherer slipped past Brian Black 2-1 at heavyweight. Tuchscherer is ranked fourth while Black is seventh. The win gave the Dragons a 21-9 lead.
Tyler Mumbulo and Ralph Acosta closed the dual with decisions for the Peacocks. Eighth-ranked Mumbulo defeated Dave Burgard 6-1 at 125 pounds and Acosta added a 9-0 major decision over Troy MacFarland.
Upper Iowa will close the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual meet portion of its schedule Saturday night at Southwest Minnesota State.
