Minnesota State-Mankato blasts St. Cloud State, 41-3

Mankato, Minn. -- The Minnesota State wrestling team was in action tonight at the Taylor Center taking on North Central Conference rival St. Cloud State in dual action. The Mavericks picked up pins in their first two matches and never looked back as they rolled over the winless Huskies 41-3. MSU is now 13-2 (2-1 NCC) in duals this year while SCSU drops to 0-8.

Eighth-ranked 125 pound sophomore Nick Smith (Yankton, S.D.) started the night off for MSU and wasted no time doing so. Smith pinned Brent Johnson 11 seconds into the match and put up the first Maverick points.

Junior 133 pounder Jeff Pfaffinger (Blue Earth, Minn.) pinned Brent Johnson at 4:08 of the second period for the win and put MSU up 12-0.

Junior Jeremy Sogge (Paynesville, Minn.) got the call at 141 for MSU and faced Shad Tappe. Tappe forced an overtime period after receiving a riding time point and picked up a takedown in the extra period for the win.

At 149, freshman Travis Puig (Barron, Wis.) pinned Tom Messeli at 4:05 for the win. Third-ranked senior Mathias Bitz (Bismarck, N.D.) received the win at 157 by forfeit.

Sophomore Jeremiah Nowak (Edgar, Wis.) downed Tom Anderson in the 165 pound match with a 9-4 decision. At 174, Jason Moore gave top-ranked junior Travis Krinkie a scare but Krinkie was able to hold on for the 8-5 win.

At 184, top-ranked senior John Koons (Crosby, Minn.) won in dominating fashion and picked up his team-leading ninth win by tech fall. Koons beat Neil Russell 17-0 and won his 14th straight dual match. He has not surrendered a single point to his opponent in his last seven matches.

Junior Ben Janike (Waseca, Minn.) picked up the win at 197 pounds with a 4-1 decision over Highro Sandoval.

Freshman Tom Block (Waseca, Minn.) who has been wrestling at 197 in his prior matches this season made the move up to heavyweight and faced Brandon Nowak. In what seemed like a mismatch on paper with Nowak having nearly 80 pounds on Block, proved to be no to be nothing of that sort. Block used an early escape and with being on top most of the match received the riding time point to win the match 2-0.

The Mavericks will be back on the mat tomorrow for their final home action of the year when Truman State comes to town. The dual is slated for 3 p.m. in the Taylor Center.
