Michigan wins 4 of final 5 bouts to rally past Minnesota

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team kept on fighting until the end, winning four of the final five bouts, to claim a 22-15 comeback win over No. 11 Minnesota on "Queen Day" Sunday afternoon (Jan. 19) in front of 2,764 fans at Crisler Center. The Wolverines won six bouts in all, earning bonus points in two, to secure their third straight Big Ten Conference dual win.

The Golden Gophers took a 12-6 lead into the intermission break, after earning bonus points in each of the preceding two bouts. After the break, junior/sophomore Jelani Embree, ranked 17th in the latest InterMat poll at 184 pounds, took advantage of a second life -- a last-second Minnesota takedown was waved off in the third period -- to win in overtime, defeating 15th-ranked Owen Webster, 3-1, and swing some momentum back in the Wolverines' favor. Embree, who just missed on a leg attack late in the second, wrapped up Webster in a bodylock and, after missing on an inside trip, dropped him to the mat.

Fifth-year senior Jackson Striggow, a Minnesota native, won a crucial swing match at 197 pounds, earning a 6-4 decision over Hunter Ritter to even the team score, 12-12, with Michigan strongly favored in two of the final three bouts. After a scoreless first period, Striggow finished on a pair of takedowns in the second and added a reversal midway through the third.

Sophomore Mason Parris and sophomore/freshman Joey Silva earned bonus at heavyweight at 133 pounds, respectively, to slam the door on the Golden Gophers. Parris, ranked No. 2 nationally, secured his third straight pin -- and seventh of the season -- at the 3:55 mark against Garrett Joles. Parris scored five takedowns and transitioned right to a half off the fifth to put Joles on his back midway through the second period. Parris improved to 19-0 on the season.

Silva also stayed unbeaten with an 11-3 major decision against Brent Jones to clinch the dual victory in the final bout. Silva scored four takedowns, including two in the first period, and added points in the third for illegal-hold penalty, an escape and 1:24 in riding-time advantage. He is 3-0 since making his season debut last week.

Michigan earned two wins over the first half of the dual with senior/junior Kanen Storr and sophomore/freshman Will Lewan securing back-to-back decisions at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively. Both broke through after scoreless first periods. Storr scored a quick reversal in the second and followed with four takedowns -- two apiece in the second and third -- and rode for 1:14 to beat Jake Bergelend, 11-4. Lewan used double underhooks and a trip to score the winning takedown early in the third period in a 4-2 win against Ryan Thomas. He rode for much of the third period to accumulate 1:02 in time advantage.

The Wolverines will hit the road next weekend for the first time this season in dual competition. Michigan will face Northwestern at 7 p.m. CST on Friday (Jan. 24) in Evanston, Illinois, before traveling south for a 1 p.m. CST slate against Illinois on Sunday (Jan. 26) in Champaign.
