Michigan rolls Indiana for dominant road win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team took eight of 10 matches, earning bonus points in five, to claim a dominant 34-6 win against Indiana on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 25) at the Hoosiers' University Gymnasium. Among the individual victories, the Wolverines posted a pin, a technical fall and two major decisions to improve to claim their second straight Big Ten Conference dual win.

The Wolverines never trailed in the dual, winning the first five bouts, including a forfeit at the opening weight for junior/sophomore Conor Youtsey's second six-point victory of the weekend at 125 pounds.

Fifth-year senior Zebulon Hilyard earned his first collegiate dual win in the subsequent match at 133 pounds, using a second-period rideout and a quick reversal in the third to defeat Alonzo Shepherd, 3-0. He ended the bout with 1:18 riding-time advantage.

The Wolverines poured on points en route to consecutive major decisions from sophomore/freshman George Fisher and freshman Alec Pantaleo at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively. Fisher, ranked 17th, rolled to an 11-1 win over Sean Brown, scoring on three takedowns -- two in the first period -- and tilted him for two back points in the third. He also boasted 4:38 riding-time advantage. Pantaleo finished on seven takedowns, including five in the opening frame, to beat Trevor Moody, 14-6, and improve to 5-0 in Big Ten dual action.

Sophomore Brian Murphy, ranked 15th, earned a stingy 6-1 decision over Luke Blanton at 157 pounds. He scored quickly on a go-behind in the first, added another out of second-period scramble and rode out the third, accumulating 2:50 in riding-time advantage.

The Hoosiers got on the board with back-to-back decisions from their ranked wrestlers at 165 and 174 pounds. Seventh-ranked Tyler Walsh claimed the marquee match against junior/sophomore Taylor Massa, ranked 10th, at the former weight. Massa was in deep on a leg in the first period, but Walsh scrambled to secure a takedown and put the Wolverine on his back for two points. He also added a reversal in the waning moments of the third.

Sophomore Domenic Abounader, ranked 10th, regained the momentum for the Wolverines with a dominant 15-0 technical fall Jake Masengale at 184 pounds. Abounader scored quickly in the first period on an inside trick out of a bodylock before turking him for three sets of three-point near falls. He struck again on a single leg early in the second and turked Masengale for two to end the bout at the 4:25 mark. It was Abouander's third technical fall of the season.

Fifth-year senior Max Huntley, ranked eighth, cruised to a 10-3 decision over Luke Sheridan at 197 pounds, scoring on three takedowns -- one in each frame -- and added a quick reversal third. After earning a stall point midway through the third and with the major in mind, he secured his final takedown late but had to settle for the decision victory.

Sophomore heavyweight Adam Coon, ranked seventh, put an exclamation point on the Wolverine victory, immediately tossing Garret Goldman to secure his ninth fall of the season at the 2:05 mark. Coon has pinned four of his five Big Ten dual opponents.

The Wolverines will return home next Friday (Jan. 30), hosting four-time defending NCAA champion Penn State at 7 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena.
