Michigan remains undefeated with win over Purdue

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team continued its perfect start to the 2018-19 season, claiming seven individual matches en route to a 23-9 win over No. 18 Purdue on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 20) in front of 1,756 fans at Cliff Keen Arena.

The Wolverines improved to 8-0 on the season, tying the program's best start since an undefeated 14-0 season in 1973-74. Michigan also started 8-0 during the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons. Michigan owns four wins over ranked opponents this season and is 4-0 in Big Ten Conference duals.

Michigan earned bonus points in two bouts, while three Wolverines defeated ranked Purdue opponents. Senior/junior Stevan Micic, ranked No. 1 nationally at 133 pounds, did both, cruising to a 9-1 major decision over 19th-ranked Ben Thornton to put U-M ahead for good in the dual's second bout. Micic scored on takedowns in the first and second periods, added a two-point tilt in the second and rode out the third to accumulate 4:33 in time advantage. He improved to 8-0 on the season with seven bonus wins.

Junior/sophomore Kanen Storr, ranked fifth at 141 pounds, also took advantage of a third-period rideout in his 2-0 decision over Nate Limmex in the subsequent bout. After a scoreless first period, Storr escaped quickly in the second and used several hard mat returns to stay in control in the third. He finished with 1:51 in riding-time advantage.

Senior/junior Ben Lamantia picked up his second dual win this weekend while filling in for fifth-year senior Malik Amine at 149 pounds, coming up just short of a bonus point with an 11-4 decision against Parker Filius. Lamantia scored four takedowns, including two in the first period, and rode for exactly 1:00 advantage time. Lamantia also owns a dual win at 157 pounds this season.

Fifth-year senior Alec Pantaleo, ranked 11th at 157 pounds, rallied to a 4-3 decision over 12th-ranked Griffin Parriott behind a late double-leg takedown and rideout in the second period. Pantaleo, who trailed early after giving up a takedown in a first-period scramble, escaped quickly in the third to take his first lead and stayed on the attack, just missing on a couple late shots to ice it. Pantaleo, who missed most of the first semester with illness, has defeated ranked opponents in two of his last three wins.

Senior/junior Logan Massa, ranked seventh at 165 pounds, secured his second major decision of the weekend with a dominant 14-4 win over Cole Wysocki after the intermission break. Massa scored on six takedowns, including three in the first period, and rode for 3:13. It was his second bonus win over Wyscoki this season, adding to a 9-1 major decision at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational (Nov. 30-Dec. 1).

Senior/junior Myles Amine, ranked third nationally, flipped a loss from last season's Purdue dual with a 5-3 decision over 14th-ranked Dylan Lydy at 174 pounds. Amine scored on a fireman's carry on the edge early in the first -- that was challenged and upheld -- and iced the bout with a high crotch midway through the third. Amine is a near-perfect 13-1 on the season.

After back-to-back Purdue wins at 184 and 197 pounds, freshman Mason Parris closed out the dual with a 10-7 decision against Jacob Aven at heavyweight. Parris, ranked eighth nationally and unbeaten in duals, used two first-period single legs to build an early lead, but Purdue tied it with a counter takedown late in the period. Parris added another single on a second-period restart and accumulated 2:24 in riding-time advantage.

Michigan (8-0, 4-0 Big Ten) will square off against rival Ohio State, also undefeated and ranked No. 2 nationally, next Friday (Jan. 25) at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio. The dual is slated for a 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
