Michigan dominates Indiana for sixth straight win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan team picked up its sixth straight win in dominant fashion, cruising to a 33-6 win against No. 21 Indiana on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 24) in front of 1,402 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. The Wolverines won eight individual bouts, earning bonus points in four.

Michigan won each of the final five bouts after the intermission break, highlighted by 14th-ranked sophomore/freshman Davonte Mahomes' dramatic 9-8 win against sixth-ranked Nate Jackson in the marquee match at 174 pounds. The bout went back in forth with Mahomes taking the initial lead on a first-period double leg and Jackson taking over with two second-period takedowns. With the score knotted up at 7-7 in the third period, Mahomes sacrificed the lead on a stall warning -- his second -- on the edge of the mat but rallied late, finishing on a single leg with less than 20 seconds remaining. He rode out the remainder of the contest to hang on for the win.

The Wolverines followed with bonus wins from their upperweight captains, including back-to-back falls from junior Domenic Abounader and graduate student Max Huntley at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively. Abounader, ranked ninth in the latest InterMat poll, stuck Wyatt Wilson in just 1:16 -- but not before posting a single-leg takedown, eight back points and ultimately using a power half to end the match. It was his fourth pin of the season.

Huntley, ranked sixth, picked up his fifth fall of the season in the next bout, using a head scoop to pin Jake Masengale at the 4:24 mark. Huntley built up a big early lead with three first-period takedowns but missed a pair of early head scoop opportunities before making it stick late in the second frame.

Junior heavyweight Adam Coon, ranked fourth, put an exclamation point on the dual with a 19-4 technical fall against Fletcher Miller in the final bout. Coon finished on six takedowns, including three in the final period, and added a four-point near fall off a bow and arrow in the first. He scored his final points, a counter takedown, with just one second remaining on the clock to secure the tech fall -- his second of the weekend. Coon improved to 10-0 on the season.

Indiana claimed the dual's first bout, where Elijah Oliver used a big third period to defeat 20th-ranked senior/junior Conor Youtsey, 5-4, on a late takedown. Youtsey recorded the majority of the offense in the contest but could not finish on several chances in the first and seconds periods. He picked up a pair of stall points in the third, but Oliver countered a single shot to take the lead and iced it with another late takedown.

The Wolverines bounced back with wins in each of the next three matches, including a major decision at 133 pounds from 17th-ranked senior Rossi Bruno, who blew up his bout against Alonzo Shepherd in the second period to secure a 15-2 win. Shepherd got too high in the top position early in the second period, and Bruno took advantage, reaching back and pulling him over his head and onto his back for a six-point move. The Wolverine added a pair of takedowns in the third and accumulating 3:02 in riding-time advantage.

Sophomore/freshman Zac Hall was victorious in his dual-meet debut at 141 pounds, finishing on two takedowns en route to a 6-3 decision against Cole Weaver. After failing to finish on an early single shot, he countered a Weaver high crotch for a takedown in the closing seconds of the first period before adding an ankle pick early in the second. He stayed on the offensive, just missing on another late single to win his first ever match at Keen Arena.

Sophomores Alec Pantaleo and Garrett Sutton rounded out the Wolverines' winners with decisions at 149 and 165 pounds, respectively. Pantaleo, ranked sixth, defeated Luke Blanton, 7-2, with three takedowns, including two in the first period and one at the final buzzer. Sutton also took advantage of an early start against Eric Roach at 165, finishing on a quick single leg and adding a second-period double leg to kick off U-M's dominant second half of the dual.
