The Bearcats improved to 2-0 overall and will travel to Kenosha, Wis., on Saturday, December 3rd for the Wisconsin Open hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
Junior Tyler Orr (Mattoon, Ill./Mattoon) defeated Eddie Ortiz in a 5-0 decision at 125 pounds to give McKendree a 3-0 lead out of the gate. Freshman Dylan Viglasky followed suit at 133 pounds and gave the Bearcats a 7-0 lead by earning a 9-1 major decision win over Ethyn Holbrook.
Cumberland cut the deficit to 7-6 following a forfeit win at 141 pounds, but McKendree rattled off three straight wins to extend its lead. Redshirt sophomore Devin Patterson (Mattoon, Ill./Mattoon) defeated Andy Schoultz by decision, 14-7, at 149 pounds to make the score 10-6, and sophomore Josh Ballard (Troy, Ill./Triad) edged Zeke Hunt in a 9-7 decision at 157 pounds to push the lead out to 13-6. Freshman Tim Gilbert (St. Mary's, Ga./Camden County) defeated Cody Bleaken by technical fall, 15-0, at 165 pounds to give the Bearcats an 18-6 advantage with only four matches remaining.
A decision victory by the Bulldogs at 174 pounds cut the McKendree lead to 18-9, but the Bearcats rattled off three straight victories to seal the dual match win. Redshirt junior Kyle Reid (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East) defeated Cody Linton by major decision, 18-5, at 184 pounds to give McKendree a 22-9 lead, and junior Andrew Davis (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) defeated Jesse Green by decision, 5-2, at 197 pounds to extend the lead to 25-9. Redshirt freshman Ross Janney (Daleville, Ind./Yorktown) put an exclamation mark on the win by pinning Joe Hill in 41-seconds to bring the final score to 31-9.
