Maryland extends winning streak at UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- In his first appearance since the Midlands Championships, eighth-ranked Spencer Myers opened the dual with a pin over North Carolina's Frank Abbondanza, 1:34 into the match as the Terps went on to defeat the Tar Heels, 25-10, to remain unbeaten Friday night at Carmichael Arena.

Facing a hostile environment, No. 13 Maryland (13-0, 3-0) won seven matches and will travel to Charlottesville tomorrow in preparation for a dual against 22nd-ranked Virginia.

"I am happy. Our guys went out in a tough environment, stepped up and performed," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "Our guys wrestled well."

The meet opened with the 285-pound matchup. Myers led 6-0 before pinning Abbondanza. Shane Gentry, ranked 19th at 125, followed Myers and won a 7-6 decision over Brian Bokoski to increase Maryland's advantage to 9-0.

After the Tar Heels cut the Maryland lead to six, Ben Dorsay earned valuable bonus points with a 15-2 major decision over Jonathan Burns to give the Terrapins a 13-3 lead.

Second-ranked Josh Asper remained unbeaten at 165 with a 6-2 decision over Kyle Kiss, and fifth-ranked Christian Boley won his team-leading 26th match to clinch the win for Maryland.

The Terps and Cavaliers square off at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Charlottesville, Va.
