Pins by Stencel, Simon key Central Michigan's fifth straight dual victory

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan wrestling team won seven matches, two of them by pin in rolling to a 27-12 Mid-American Conference dual-meet victory over Kent State on Sunday at McGuirk Arena.

The win was CMU's fifth straight and it lifted the Chippewas to 7-4 in duals. They finished 7-2 in league duals and are scheduled to close the regular season on Friday, Feb. 21 (7 p.m.) at home with a nonconference dual with Michigan State.

CMU's pins came from Dresden Simon (141 pounds) and Matt Stencel (285).

It was the second pin of the weekend and the 14th of the season for Stencel, who is ranked fourth nationally and has won eight consecutive matches and is 25-4. Stencel entered the weekend tied for third nationally with 12 pins. He posted a first-period pin to clinch CMU's win over Buffalo on Friday.

Stencel's pin on Sunday came in 39 seconds over sophomore Spencer Berthold, who entered the dual with 10 of his 13 victories having come on pins.

Simon, who is ranked 15th, improved to 24-8 with his third pin of the season. It marked the 14th time this season that Simon has won with bonus points. It was his first pin since Nov. 17, a 19-match stretch.

The Chippewas also got decision victories from Ben Cushman (184), Landon Pelham (197), Drew Hildebrandt (125), Corbyn Munson (149) and Logan Parks (157).

The meet began at 174 pounds and CMU won four of the first five matches in building a 15-3 lead after Hildebrandt's win.

"I think that challenged our upper weights," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said of the start at 174. "Our big guys came out with a little bit of a spark and I think it took the dual meet away from them right away."

Hildebrandt, who is ranked ninth nationally, ran his win streak to eight matches and improved to 27-3.

In addition to Hildebrandt and Stencel, Simon, Parks and Pelham went 2-0 on the weekend, and the Chippewas got solid performances from a pair of redshirt freshman, Munson and Cushman, on Sunday.

"They've been up and down a lot this year, but I think they're improving," Borrelli said. "Ben did a real good job of sprawling in his match and that's something we've been working on, and Corbyn did a real good job of just continuing to wrestle. Those are things you're looking for."

After Friday's dual with Michigan State, the Chippewas will turn their attention to the most important part of the season, the MAC Championships and then the NCAA Championships. The MAC Championship are scheduled for March 7-8 at Northern Illinois. The NCAA Championships are set for March 19-21 in Minneapolis.

"The dual-meet season is tough on us right now because we're developing in five weights … so there's a lot of pressure on us in a dual meet because we don't have a whole lot of margin for error if one of those four or five guys gets beat, someone's got to step up or we'll lose the dual meet," Borrelli said. "Once we get into a tournament format I think our guys are going to be a little more relaxed. We've got some big point-scoring potential, but we've also got some guys who probably can wrestle better without that (dual-meet) pressure on them."
