Ohio earns third straight MAC win with road victory at SIUE

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- The Ohio wrestling team (5-5, 3-2 MAC) picked up its third-straight Mid-American Conference victory to close out the road portion of its 2019-20 regular season schedule, knocking off SIUE (1-10, 0-7 MAC), 24-9, this afternoon at First Community Arena at the Vadalabene Center.

Ohio's win over SIUE concluded a four-match MAC road trip. Four of the Bobcats' five dual meet wins have come away from Athens this season.

The Bobcats took seven of the 10 weight classes from the Cougars, with six of Ohio's victories coming by decision.

SIUE took a 3-0 lead to open the match as redshirt senior Gage Datlovsky came away with a 9-5 win by decision at 125 pounds. Ohio responded by winning the next two bouts by decision as redshirt freshman Giovanni DiSabato bested redshirt sophomore Jacob Blaha, 10-6, at 133 and redshirt senior Shakur Laney (Canal Winchester, Ohio) followed with a 5-3 triumph over redshirt freshman Saul Ervin at 141.

The Cougars evened the score at six-all when redshirt senior Tyshawn Williams posted a 5-2 win by decision at 149, but the Bobcats answered with three-straight wins by decision to grab a 15-6 advantage. Redshirt senior Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio) beat sophomore Justin Ruffin, 5-3, at 157, redshirt junior Joe Terry (Pickerington, Ohio) topped freshman Chase Diehl, 9-7, at 165, and sophomore Logan Stanley (Fredericksburg, Ohio) bested junior Kevin Gschwendtner, 6-4, at 174.

SIUE cut the Ohio lead to 15-9 when redshirt freshman Austin Andres emerged with a 4-3 win by decision at 184. That's as close as the Bobcats let the Cougars get, though. Senior Hunter Yeargan (Willard, Mo.) widened the gap by pinning redshirt senior Jake McKiernan in five minutes at 197. Redshirt freshman Jordan Earnest (Wadsworth, Ohio) put an exclamation point the afternoon for the Bobcats by earning a 6-4 win by decison over sophomore Colton McKiernan at 285.

Ohio will begin a stretch of five-straight home dates to close out the 2019-20 regular season when it plays host to MAC rival Central Michigan on Friday (Feb. 31) at 7 p.m. ET at the Convocation Center in Athens. Two days later, the Bobcats will take on Bloomsburg at 1 p.m. ET in another MAC matchup at the Convo.
