That lead began with Tyler Buckwalter (Mill Hall, Pa.), who edged Seldon Wright, 5-4 at 165. In the second, Buckwalter countered a Wright shot and converted his own single to a double for a takedown and rode him for the rest of the period. Wright got to his feet twice early in the third, but Buckwalter returned him to the mat both times and was able to secure a key riding time point.
In his first career dual meet, Jairod James (Bedford, Ohio) overcame 1-0 deficit after two periods to down Brooks Climmons 3-2. Despite moving up a weight class, James did not hesitate to attack the upper body of Climmons and got the lone takedown in the third on an underhook to a bear hug.
Old Dominion trimmed the deficit to 16-13 with two matches left.
Redshirt freshman Kyle Conel (Ashtabula, Ohio) then extended his winning streak to 11 matches with a 10-4 decision over Austin Coburn. Conel used an underhook to set up a six-point takedown and jump out to an 8-1 lead in the first.
At 19-13, the Monarchs' only chance for a team win was a pin at heavyweight. But the pin would belong to redshirt freshman Devin Nye (Springfield, Ohio). Leading 2-0 and starting the second period from the bottom, Nye caught Andrew Snyder hanging his head low and flipped him to his back for his seventh pin of the season.
The Flashes took five of the last six matches beginning with senior Ian Miller (Oak Harbor, Ohio), who came up just short of a tech fall in a 14-0 shutout of Austin Eads. Miller scored a takedown in the first five seconds of the match before Eads was called for stalling four times in the opening period. After an injury delay on an illegal move by Eads, Miller elected to keep wrestling. Fighting through pain, Miller turned a single leg shot into a six-point move in the third. While improving to 17-0 on the year, Miller passed Nick Nemeth for fifth place on Kent State's career win list with 122.
Senior Mike DePalma (Jeannette, Pa.) scored a third period takedown against All-American Alexander Richardson, before dropping a 4-2 decision in sudden victory.
Chris Mecate, another ODU All-American, also needed sudden victory to defeat Anthony Tutolo (Concord, Ohio) 3-1.
The Flashes took their first lead when Mack McGuire (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) earned a forfeit at 133.
Kent State will get an 11-day break from competition prior to a long MAC road trip. The Golden Flashes will visit Northern Illinois on Friday, Feb. 5, and Northern Iowa on Saturday, Feb. 6.
