EMU (6-6, 2-5 MAC) won seven of ten matches, which included pins from redshirt sophomore Kayne MacCallum (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) and redshirt freshman No. 17 Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc). KSU (2-13, 0-6 MAC), meanwhile, secured three wins, with one pin of their own.
The dual began at 174 lbs. where redshirt senior Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edward) got things started with a solid 6-2 decision, notching two takedowns, an escape, and riding time, to start the dual 3-0.
At 184 lbs., a tight battle went to overtime tied at 3 between Jerald Spohn and MacCallum after both notched takedowns, along with an escape and stall call.
In the first OT period, Spohn began to push MacCallum back, but he countered with a throw, which landed Spohn on his back, and he worked the huge pin in 7:31 to get the Eagles out to a 9-0 lead after two. It was MacCallum's second pin of the season, and his second in overtime.
The Flashes got on the board at 197 lbs. with an 8-1 decision to tighten the gap heading into the heavyweight bout. There, redshirt junior No. 17 Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) got back on track, snapping his two-match losing skid with a 6-3 decision. Tied at two after two periods, Hutchison got a pair of third period takedowns to secure his team-best 23rd victory of the season.
Eastern notched another pin at the 125 lbs. match, as Gonser snapped a two-bout losing streak of his own, locking up the cradle and getting the fall in 6:06. It was his sixth pin of the season, and his fourth in dual action. Halfway through the dual, Eastern had the commanding 18-3 advantage.
Kent State secured another win at 133 lbs. with a 4-3 decision, but EMU countered with a high-scoring win at 141 lbs. Redshirt junior No. 33 Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)) wracked up 13 points with five takedowns and three escapes, to get a 13-9 decision for his fourth straight dual win, improving his dual record to 8-3.
Redshirt senior No. 27 Nick Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) kept things rolling at 149 lbs. as he secured the dual win with a 6-3 decision with riding time. His sixth dual win of the year put the team score out of reach at 24-6. The Flashes got a pin at 157 lbs., but EMU ended the match with a 10-4 decision win for redshirt senior Devan Marry (Hudson, Mich.-Hudson), his fifth dual win, to wrap-up the 27-12 victory.
Eastern gets back into action next Friday, Feb. 10, with a home dual against No. 17 Central Michigan. The meet will be a combo "Beauty and the Beast" event with EMU gymnastics, and will begin at 7 p.m. inside Bowen Field House.
