Eastern Michigan bounces back with win over ODU

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team got back on track and secured its first Mid-American Conference win of the season with a 25-14 dual victory over Old Dominion University Sunday afternoon, Jan 8, inside the Convocation Center.

EMU (4-2, 1-1 MAC) won five bouts, and secured a sixth via forfeit. Getting bonus points for the Eagles were redshirt freshman Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) who notched his fifth pin of the season and third in dual action, as well as redshirt junior Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)) who had a 12-4 major decision, his first of the season.

Old Dominion (1-5, 1-3 MAC) had a pair of major decisions in four match wins, but could not overcome the forfeit and bonus points of the Eagles.

The dual began at 184 lbs. where ODU's nationally ranked wrestler got the afternoon started with a 10-2 major decision, giving the Monarchs an early 4-0 lead. ODU's second nationally ranked grappler took the 197 lbs. bout as well, this time by 10-5 decision to make it 7-0 after two.

The Eagles got on the board at heavyweight when No. 14 Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) used a pair of takedowns, a near fall, an escape, and over four minutes of riding time to secure an 8-2 cut EMU's deficit to four, 7-3.

Eastern took the lead at 125 lbs. where No. 18 Gonser overpowered ODU's Steven Simpson. He got a first period takedown and rode up the riding time to over two minutes. A scoreless second led to the third where Gonser started on bottom. He got the reversal midway through and locked up the cradle to get a pin in 6:52, putting EMU in front, 9-7.

The Monarchs had to forfeit the 133 lbs. match, extending the Eagle lead to 15-7 midway through the dual. From there, Eastern got a huge win at 141 lbs. to break the match open. Springer led 9-4 late in the third when he flipped his opponent for a two-point near fall right before the buzzer and his riding time secured the 12-4 major decision and extend the lead to 19-7.

ODU got back on the board at 149 lbs. with a tight 6-4 decision to put it at 19-10 with three bouts to go. The 157 lbs. put the match almost out of reach for the Monarchs in another thrilling bout. Redshirt freshman Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake) was tied 2-2 into the third and started on top looking to erase riding time. After almost giving up an escape, Carson rode his opponent back and flipped him for a two-point near fall to take a 4-2 lead. An escape made it 4-3, but Carson stood tall for the decision and the 22-10 team lead.

Old Dominion's third nationally ranked wrestler got the job done at 165 lbs. with another major decision, 14-6, to make it 22-14 heading into the final bout. Redshirt sophomore Kayne MacCallum (Libertyviille, Ill.-Libertyville) ended the dual with the fifth EMU win grinding out a 7-4 decision, and securing the 25-14 victory for the Green and White.

The Eagles return to the mats next weekend against Adrian College, Jan. 13, in Adrian, Mich. The dual is set to begin at 7 p.m.
