Lock Haven cleans up Cleveland State, 25-15

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- For the second-straight night, the Lock Haven University wrestling squad (5-10, 1-1 EWL) faced a team undefeated in Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) action, but this time LHU came out on top of Cleveland State University (5-5, 1-1 EWL) 25-15 tonight (Feb. 4) at Thomas Fieldhouse.

CSU had beaten the University of Pittsburgh 16-15 back on Jan. 26 the team's most recent dual, but the Bald Eagles took the fight to the Vikings from the start, cinching the match with two bouts left.

"I'm extremely happy with most of our guys' efforts tonight," said LHU head coach Rocky Bonomo. "In order to continue success, we need to get consistent effort from top to bottom in our lineup. I was concerned about a let-down today after the strong effort we gave last night against Edinboro, but that wasn't a problem."

LHU got wins from six of the 10 classes, including a pin from No. 17 Seth Martin (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) at 157, a major decision from junior Carlos Ponce (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah Miami Lakes) at 174, a forfeit win for No. 15 Obenson Blanc (Naples, Fla./Lely) at 125 and decisions from sophomore Casey Moore (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) at 133, No. 17 Joshua Medina (Las Vegas/Pima C.C.) at 149 and freshman Tom Kocher (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) at 197.

Blanc received his forfeit win, his 20th of the season, before the day started at 133. Moore scored a takedown on the Vikings' David Armstrong with two seconds left in the first period, putting Moore up 3-2 and igniting a 5-2 run over the remainder of the match for the 8-4 win.

CSU pulled the team score back to 9-3 in LHU's favor with a 9-5 decision of sophomore Brian Ellis (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) at 141. Medina then won the third period of his bout 5-2 to seal the 8-3 victory over Ryan Hurley and push the team score to 12-3.

At 157, Martin needed the fall to get his eighth-straight victory, a win over Victer Crenshaw. Martin found himself down 6-2 early in the first period, but bull-rushed the freshman to his back and held on for his 10th and quickest fall of the season.

Cleveland State's Tim Scarl then beat sophomore Rory McCoy (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) 11-6 at 165 before Ponce picked up his major victory in 14-4 fashion over David Gilkey.

CSU's Ron Howard, a national qualifier a year ago, needed bonus points to keep the Vikings in the team battle, but junior Derrick Morgan (Media, Pa./Athens) wouldn't allow that to happen, despite losing 11-4, pushing the match out of reach with two bouts left.

Kocher extended the lead over the experienced Ishmal Williams with an 11-4 emphasis. In the final bout of the day, the heavyweights needed extra time to decide their bout, but CSU's Rashard Goff finished off senior Tim Meyers (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) with a pin in 7:33, ending the match at 25-15.

Bonomo, Martin, Ponce, Blanc, Moore, Medina, Kocher, Ellis, McCoy, Morgan, Meyers and the rest of the Bald Eagles are back in action Friday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. as they travel to Pittsburgh (2-7, 0-2 EWL) who most recently lost to West Virginia University yesterday 20-13.
