    King women win third straight WCWA national title

    OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Coming in as the favorites, the King University women's wrestling team defended their Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association for the second straight year, earning their third consecutive title. The Tornado had 11 All-Americans, including three individual national champions, en route to the title.

    HOW IT HAPPENED

  • King finished in first place with 208.0 points while Oklahoma City University was second at 190.5 points. Simon Fraser University finished third with 170.0 points.

  • The Tornado had three national champions, all first time winners. Marina Doi started the championships for King 101 pounds where she defeated fourth-ranked Sarah Allen of The University of the Cumberlands on a 6-0 decision. Earlier in the day she defeated third-ranked Darby Huckle of Simon Fraser University 7-0 in the semifinals.

  • Also taking home a national title was senior Samantha Klingel who went 5-0 at 116 pounds. Klingel defeated top-ranked Rachel Archer of Oklahoma City University in the semifinals before defeating third-ranked Abby Lloyd of Simon Fraser 3-0 in the finals.

  • Forrest Molinari went 5-0 to take home a national title at 155 pounds. On Saturday she defeated second-ranked Niauni Hill of Lindenwood Bellville 3-2 in the semifinals before topping top-ranked Jessica Rottier of Cumberlands 7-0 in the finals.

  • At 109 pounds, Breonnah Neal reached the finals with a 10-0 technical fall win over teammate Daisy Santos. However, Neal fell to top-ranked Cody Pfau of Oklahoma City in the finals, giving her a runner-up finish.

  • Santos couldn't recover in the consolation bracket following the loss to Neal as she took a sixth place finish.

  • King had two more All-Americans at 101 pounds, Ashley Iliff and Regina Doi. Iliff fell to runner-up Allen in the semifinals before pinning sixth-ranked Hiba Salem of Menlo College in 243 to reach the third place bout. However, she fell to Huckle, giving her a fourth place finish.

  • Regina Doi worked her way through the consolation bracket with a pair of wins before falling to Huckle. However, she bounced back to defeat Salem 8-2 in the fifth place bout.

  • At 116 pounds, Hanna Grisewood earned All-American honors, coming in with a sixth place finish. She reached the semifinals before dropping three straight tight matches on Saturday. All three of her losses came to competitors that are ranked in the top five at 116 pounds.

  • Hannah Jewell reached the semifinals where she fell to second-ranked Monica Ramirez of Lindenwood University, dropping her to the consolation bracket. Jewell then defeated teammate Jessi Kee on a 6-6 decision before falling to fourth-ranked Fran Giorgio of Simon Fraser in the third place bout.

  • Kee earned a pair of wins in the consolation bracket before falling to Jewell. She then rebounded to take fifth with a 10-4 win over Missouri Baptist University's Sarah Bollinger.

  • Jacqueline Williams was also an All-American for the Tornado, taking fifth at 191 pounds. She fell in the semifinals to top-ranked Payten Smith of Simon Fraser before dropping a tight 1-1 decision to sixth-ranked Kierra Boyce of Wayland Baptist University in the consolation bracket. She bounced back to take fifth with a 5-4 decision over eighth-ranked Paige Baynes of Lindenwood.

  • Along with their third straight title, the Tornado were one of seven teams to earn WCWA Scholar accolades with a team GPA better than 3.0.

  • Marina Doi, Regina Doi and Molinari all earned WCWA Scholar Athlete honors.

    BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

    For the third straight year, head coach Jason Moorman was named WCWA Coach of the Year.

    The title marks King's third straight WCWA national championship and six national title in the last three years.

    King is also the three-time defending National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Nation Dual champion.
