Iowa State tangles with Missouri on Sunday

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State's seventh-ranked wrestling team (11-5, 1-1) resumes Big 12 conference action Sunday at 2 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum, playing host to Missouri (9-4, 1-2). The two teams met in January at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, with the Tigers picking up a 21-18 win. The Cyclones defeated Missouri last year in Columbia via Kurt Backes' major decision of Matt Pell. ISU owns the all-time series, 42-3.

"This is the best Missouri team that we've ever faced," head coach Bobby Douglas said. "Ben Askren is one of the best wrestlers in the country and we'll have to fight at every weight class."

Iowa State comes into the dual after downing Penn State last weekend, 20-18. At 141-pounds, No. 1 Nate Gallick became the 29th Cyclone to reach 100 career wins with a 17-6 major decision over No. 10 DeWitt Driscoll. ISU pulled upsets against the Nittany Lions at 149 and 184 pounds. Jason Knipp upset 11th-ranked James Woodall, 6-4, and No. 9 Kurt Backes recorded a 10-2 major decision against the nations top-ranked 184-pound wrestler, Eric Bradley.

Coming off a 17-16 upset victory over Oklahoma, No. 10 Missouri travels north to wrestle Iowa State and Northern Iowa this weekend. Junior 174-pounder, Ben Askren, became the fastest Tiger grappler to obtain 100 career victories. A two-time All-American, Askren has won 34 consecutive matches, which is currently, the longest winning streak in the nation and has 21 wins by fall. MU is paced by Askren and All-American Matt Pell (165). The Tigers boast seven ranked wrestlers and four freshmen in their projected line-up.

Iowa State will wrap up regular season action on Feb. 19 hosting Nebraska at 2 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum as part of the Cyclone "Beauty and the Beast" competition with wrestling and gymnastics competitions between the two schools going on simultaneously.
