    Iowa State crushes Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. -– It may be cold in Iowa, but No. 8 Iowa State brought the heat in Sunday's dual at Arizona State, winning 32-3. Three ISU grapplers, No. 6 David Zabriskie (HWT), No. 12 Mitch Mueller (149) and No. 6 Cyler Sanderson (157), scored major decisions and No. 20 David Bertolino recorded a technical fall at 197 pounds. The Cyclones' record stands at 14-4 with two dual meets remaining. Arizona State slips to 9-7. Iowa State will play host to Missouri next Sunday at 2 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.

Iowa State leads the all-time series 21-6 and has won four straight duals against the Sun Devils and two straight in Tempe.

"I think we wrestled real well today," ISU head coach Cael Sanderson said. "I am happy with the way things are going and we are making progress. We've been doing a great job on the mat, in tie-ups and all-around. This weekend was good for us. We are right where we want to be. We had last weekend off and we're ready to move into that last stretch of the season at home against Missouri and Nebraska and then take it into the Big 12 meet."

The Cyclones totally dominated the match, netting 35 takedown to Arizona State's one. Combined with Friday night's 40-0 win over Oregon State, Iowa State had 67 takedowns while allowing just two over the weekend.

No. 6 David Zabriskie notched his fifth major decision of the season with a 12-3 win over Kenny Lester to open the dual at heavyweight. The Cyclone put the first points on the board with a reversal seven seconds into the second period. Zabriskie then unleashed his rath on Lester in the final two minutes of action with four takedowns. The sophomore from Branchville, N.J., moves to 22-4 on the year.

"I actually like starting the duals," Zabriskie said. "I don't normally get to watch my teammates, so that was nice today. Even though I wrestled first, it didn't change my mentality. I wanted to wrestle my match. The first period was slow. He [Lester] was able to use his weight and strength in the first period, but he got tired after that and it made it easier for me to get under and finish the takedowns."

Ranked 12th-nationally, Mueller extended his win streak to five with 20-7 major decision of Jarred Trulson. Mueller held a 2-1 advantage over Trulson at the end of the first period. He then added to his lead with a pair of double-leg takedowns in the second period, but it was the third period when the Iowa City, Iowa, native blitzed the Sun Devil with five takedowns and a two-point nearfall. The sophomore has won back-to-back bouts via major decision and has six this season.

"Mitch is doing a great job," Sanderson said of his 149-pounder. "His confidence is high and when his confidence is high he is tough as nails. He's the type of wrestler that is going to get better as the season progresses and that's exactly what he's doing."

Sanderson mirrored Mueller's score with a 20-7 major decision of his own over Alex Pavlenko at 157 pounds. Sanderson scored two takedowns in the first and second periods, respectively, and like Mueller, went on an offensive mission in the final two minutes of action. Two seconds into the final period, Sanderson was able to reverse Pavlenko and then attacked on his feet with four takedowns. Now leading the team in wins, the Heber City, Utah, native holds a record of 25-3 and has seven major decisions in his sophomore campaign.

Bertolino closed out the dual with an 18-2 technical fall in 6:57 of Thor Moen. Bertolino wasted no time in scoring, getting a takedown in the bout's opening 10 seconds and was awarded backpoints with two three-point nearfalls.

The Missouri dual (Feb. 17) dual will be available to Clone Zone members on cyclones.com along with live stats. Iowa Public Television is slated to broadcast the dual live.
