Iowa defeats Minnesota to capture Big Ten dual title

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- On Sunday, Iowa defeated Minnesota, 19-12, to capture the Big Ten dual meet season championship and extend its unbeaten streak to 77.

Iowa came out strong as No. 1 Matt McDonough used three third period takedowns to dominate Zach Sanders, 10-3, at 125 pounds.

Seventh-ranked Tony Ramos kept it rolling for the Hawkeyes as he defeated No. 20 David Thorn, 7-3, at 133 to give the Hawkeyes a 7-0 lead heading into the 141-pound matchup.

At 141, Iowa's Montell Marion, an NCAA runner-up last season, won a hard fought battle, 4-3, over All-American Mike Thorn to put the Hawkeyes in front 10-0. Marion's victory over Thorn evened their all-time series in college at two wins apiece.

Minnesota's Danny Zilverberg put Minnesota on the board with a 5-3 win in sudden victory over Mark Ballweg at 149 pounds. Zilverberg was able to ride out Ballweg the entire third period to force sudden victory and scored the winning takedown early in the sudden victory period.

At 157, Iowa's Derek St. John gave up an early takedown before cruising to a 20-8 major decision victory over Matt Mincey, which put the Hawkeyes up 13-3 heading into the intermission.

No. 12 Cody Yohn came out strong for the Gophers after intermission, picking up a 6-4 victory over No. 13 Aaron Janssen to cut the deficit to 13-6. Yohn scored three nearfall points in the second period, which proved to be the difference in the match.

Minnesota's Scott Glasser, who is ranked 15th, trailed 3-0 in the third period, but came back to defeat 11th-ranked Ethen Lofthouse, 7-5. Glasser used two takedowns and three nearfall points in the third period to pull out the victory.

Freshman Kevin Steinhaus, who is ranked eighth, made it three victories in a row for the Gophers as he came from behind to edge 11th-ranked Grant Gambrall, 5-4, at 184 pounds. Like Glasser, Steinhaus trailed 3-0 in the third period, but found a way to win. With the victory, Steinhaus improved to 28-8.

With Iowa leading 13-12, Hawkeye Luke Lofthouse picked up perhaps the biggest victory of the dual meet as he upset fourth-ranked Sonny Yohn, 7-4, at 197 pounds. Lofthouse pushed the pace on Yohn and was able to pick up two takedowns in the third period. Lofthouse's victory put the Hawkeys up 16-12 going into the heavyweight match.

At heavyweight, Iowa's Blake Rasing, who is ranked 15th, needed just one takedown to defeat No. 8 Tony Nelson, 4-2.

With the win, Iowa finished its season with a dual meet record of 15-0-1, while Minnesota fell to 15-4-1.

Both teams will now prepare for the 2011 Big Ten Championships. The event will be held March 5-6 at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Illinois. InterMat will be providing coverage of the event.
