A rendering of Indiana's wrestling arena that will be completed in 2018
Hoosier wrestling is one step closer to having a new home.
Indiana University's Board of Trustees has approved the design of a new 3,000-seat arena that will be home to the school's wrestling and volleyball programs.
The new facility will be built in the heart of the athletics complex on the Bloomington campus, near Memorial Stadium and Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, IU's main arena and home to the wrestling team's current practice space. It is expected to be completed by September 2018.
The new arena will provide an intimate setting for wrestling and volleyball fans. There will be permanent grandstands on the east and west sides, with telescoping bleachers on the north and south sides. Concessions and ticketing will be in the grand lobby. In addition, there will volleyball and wrestling home-team locker rooms, visitor locker rooms and volleyball offices.
"We are excited about this new arena," IU head wrestling coach Duane Goldman said. "Moving our facility in close proximity to the other IU athletics facilities will make for a great atmosphere for fans to come see us compete."
Currently, most Hoosier home wrestling events are held at University Gym, located east of the main IU campus at the intersection of the Indiana Route 45/46 Bypass and Tenth Street in Bloomington. Opened in 1963, the gym originally was part of what was the Indiana University Laboratory School for the School of Education, hence the nickname used by some IU fans, the U-School Gym. It has a seating capacity of approximately 2,000.
As InterMat reported last month, a similarly-sized arena for wrestling and other Olympic sports is being built at Indiana Big Ten rival Ohio State .
