Indiana takes care of Ohio State in Big Ten opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana wrestling team disposed of Ohio State, 31-7, in its Big Ten opener at University Gymnasium on Jan. 20. Indiana looked strong from start to finish, winning eight matches en route to the 24-point victory. Indiana improves to 10-0 and 1-0 in Big Ten matches, while Ohio State falls to 3-6 and 0-1 in Big Ten action.

The Hoosiers wasted no time in grabbing bonus points as sophomore Dave Herman (IU) tallied a 10-1 major decision in the opening bout over Josh Bartholomew (OSU) at 285 pounds. Herman improved to 22-7 (1-0 Big Ten), and currently leads the Hoosiers in wins.

At 125 pounds, defending national champion Joe Dubuque (IU) continued the Hoosier storm with a 17-2 technical fall over Nathan Costello (OSU). Top-ranked Dubuque defended his undefeated season improving to 13-0 and 1-0 in Big Ten contests. Dubuque currently stands at 99 career victories and looks to claim his 100th win against Purdue on Jan. 22. The senior would be the 12th grappler in Indiana history to reach the feat.

Redshirt freshman Andrae Hernandez then got the better of Ohio State's Reece Humphrey in one of the closest matches of the night at 133 pounds. After three periods of overtime, Hernandez used a combination of an escape and defense to claim the 8-7 decision in extra periods.

The Buckeyes then countered with back-to-back wins at 141 and 149 pounds. T.J. Enright (OSU) took a 9-3 decision over senior Nick Spatola at 141 pounds to get the Buckeyes on the scoreboard. Ohio State followed with a 12-2 major decision by seventh-ranked J Jaggers over junior Isaac Knable (IU) at 149 pounds to slim the Hoosier lead to 12-7.

IU then followed with five straight wins to claim the dual victory.

Seventh-ranked Brandon Becker (IU) claimed a 16-3 major decision over Steven Sommer (OSU) at 157 pounds to improve to 15-3 overall and 1-0 in Big Ten action. Sophomore Max Dean (IU), in the 165-pound weight class, clinched an 8-3 decision over Nathaniel Augustson (OSU) to move to 20-6 (1-0 Big Ten) on the season.

Sophomore 174-pounder Marc Bennett (11-8, 1-0 Big Ten) notched the Hoosiers lone fall of the dual, pinning Zach Craiglow at the 6:12 mark to give IU a 25-7 advantage.

IU sophomore Justin Curran (184) and senior Brady Richardson (197) wrapped up the Hoosier domination with a pair of decisions. Curran pulled out a slim 5-4 decision over Corey Morrison (OSU) before fifth-ranked Richardson closed the evening with a 12-5 decision over Josh Bartholomew (OSU).

Curran improved to 20-5 overall and 1-0 in Big Ten duals, while Richardson upheld his undefeated dual mark at 9-0 (1-0 Big Ten) and moved to 21-3 on the season.
