125-pounder Delian Schneider began the Berg's second OAC dual match of the year with a loss. The senior Student Prince fell by decision, 7-5 before sophomore Colin McDermitt stole back the lead. McDermitt scored a major decision, 10-0, at 133-pounds to move the Berg ahead, 4-3.
Senior Ian Gillespie scored another shutout victory at 141-pounds to push the Tricolor ahead, 7-3. The Blue Streaks took a one-point lead with a technical fall, 22-7, over sophomore Damon Cheek at 149-pounds.
John Carroll extended their advantage at 157-pounds as sophomore Aaron Banko went down to JCU's Turner Gott, who is currently ranked seventh by d3wrestle.com. At 165-pounds, transfer Myles Wright conceded a fall in 2:12 to move the Blue Streaks to an 11-point advantage, 18-7.
After the 165-pound bout, the Student Princes would not surrender another team point.
Junior Brennan Kelly collected a pivotal 10-9 decision at 174-pounds followed by a major decision from junior Richard Dowdley to bring the team score to 18-14. With the Berg in striking distance, a victory from Jason Russell and Nino Majoy were crucial to keep the Berg's OAC regular season title hopes alive.
Russell gave the Berg their first lead since the 141-pound weight class with a dominant 15-0 technical fall at 197-pounds. Sophomore Nino Majoy sealed the match for the Berg grapplers and third year head coach Ned Shuck with a decisive 8-0 major decision in the heavyweight bout.
The Student Princes will face their most difficult challenge on Tuesday, February 11, when they host the University of Mount Union. The Purple Raiders, who have six individuals ranked by d3wrestle.com, will travel to Tiffin undefeated, 1-0, as their match with Ohio Northern scheduled for this evening was postponed.
As a team, the Purple Raiders are ranked tenth in the nation by the National Wrestling Coaches Association while the Berg grapplers occupy 22nd.
Varsity wrestling will begin at 7:30 p.m. from Seiberling Gymnasium next Tuesday.
