    Heidelberg dominates Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio -- The Berg wrestling team opened up their 2014 Ohio Athletic Conference dual match schedule with a 35-6 victory over the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace.

The Berg entered the matchup riding a three year winning streak against the Yellow Jackets. Following their two-loss victory, third year Ned Shuck remains unbeaten against Baldwin Wallace having dominated the Yellow Jackets 115-18 in their last three meetings.

"We knew we would have a tough fight against these guys," said Shuck. "We came ready to fight, we came ready to battle and it is a great way to kick of the OAC dual season with a win. I'm really proud of our guys."

Senior Delian Schneider held his own against the BW's 125-pounder Jesse Gunter until the final minute of the third period. The Yellow Jacket, who is ranked as a contender by d3wrestle.com, scored a takedown as time expired in the third period to bring the score to 6-6 and send the match to sudden victory overtime.

Gunter out lasted Schneider and scored a takedown on the edge of the mat to put Baldwin Wallace ahead, 3-0.

Sophomore 133-pounder Justin Kihn scored a six-point fall in a time of 5:40 to propel the Berg to a 6-3 lead.

"We try to instill a dominating style and scoring bonus points is how you do that," stated Shuck.

The 141-pound weight class was occupied by senior Ian Gillespie who entered the match 18-10 overall. Gillespie accumulated 4:00 of riding time through the second and third period on his way to an 8-0 major decision and his 19th victory of the season.

With the Berg grapplers leading the Yellow Jackets, 10-3, sophomore 149-pounder Damon Cheek scored a tight 3-0 decision.

At 157-pounds, sophomore Aaron Banko surrendered the second Berg loss of the evening in a 5-2 decision.

Senior Jeremy Stepp rallied at 165-pounds with a narrow victory, 6-5 to move the team score to 13-6 in Heidelberg's favor.

Brennan Kelly followed Stepp's decision with one of his own at 174-pounds, 4-3. Junior 184-pounder Richard Dowdley put his BW counterpart striaght to the mat twice for a takedown and three near fall points as he went on to win by major decision, 11-0.

As the Berg led 23-6, senior Jason Russell made quick work of his opponent at 197-pounds. Russell scored a first period fall in a time of 1:56 to propel the Berg to a 29-6 lead.

Heavyweight Nino Majoy received a forfeit to conclude the Berg's first OAC dual match.

"We will use a win like this to build confidence but we can't look to far ahead," said Shuck. "We have to focus on Alma this weekend and I tell the guys to take it one match at a time so that's what we will do."

The Student Princes will return to the mat this coming weekend as they travel to Alma, Mich. for the Alma College Open. Wrestling will begin at 8:30 a.m.
