“It was a good match. That's a good Big Ten team and they're going to win a lot down the road,†Goodale said. “That kind of sets us up for the national duals. Obviously we're going to probably make the national duals at this point. Where we're going to go is going to depend on where we finish in this conference. We've got some big ones coming up, but that one had me worried for a long time. They wrestle really, really hard. Overall it was a good team win.â€
The Scarlet Knights won seven of 10 matches on the afternoon to upend the Boilermakers. RU gained bonus-point victories in three consecutive matches from No. 6 141-pounder Anthony Ashnault, No. 14 149-pounder Ken Theobold, and No. 18 157-pounder John Van Brill to put the dual out of reach.
Ashnault posted his 14th bonus-point win of the season and is now 18-3 overall after his 10-0 major decision against Kyle Ayersman. Theobold (14-5) notched a tech fall for the second-straight match against Nate Limmex, needing only the opening period to end the bout.
Van Brill (17-7) won by injury default against NCAA qualifier Alex Griffin in the opening period.
125-pound true freshman Brandon Paetzell notched his 12th win of the season to start the dual off, before RU closed the match out with decisions from No. 14 Nicholas Gravina (184 Pounds), Matthew Correnti (197 Pounds) and heavyweight Razohnn Gross.
Gross (7-7) and Purdue's Tyler Kral were in a battle to close the match, needing a second round of tiebreakers to decide the bout. With Kral starting the second 30-second stanza on top, Gross needed a quick escape to preserve riding time and win the match. The Franklin Park, New Jersey, native freed himself of Kral's grip with 1.5 seconds of advantage, and defended until the horn sounded to win, 4-3.
Gravina (14-4) held off Tanner Lynde to sweep the weekend, while Correnti (11-7) solidified a 5-2 decision with a third-period takedown on a re-shot after Christian Brunner reached for his legs.
Paetzell won for the third time in four matches and is now 12-4 overall in his true freshman campaign.
133-pounder Scott DelVecchio fell, 5-4, in tiebreakers in the front half of the dual against Luke Welch. Welch reversed DelVecchio as the final horn sounded to win by a point as the Scarlet Knight eyed a 4-3 win.
RU's other two losses were also close decisions. 165-pounder Willie Scott fell short in a 6-4 loss to Dylan Lydy. At 174-pounds, Phillip Bakuckas was edged, 7-4, against Jacob Morrisey.
Rutgers returns to the mat Friday at No. 15 Michigan (7 p.m.) and Sunday at Michigan State (2 p.m.). RU's dual against the Wolverines will stream live on BTN Plus, while Sunday's match against the Spartans will be televised live nationally on Big Ten Network.
