    George Mason edges Edinboro in EWL matchup

    FAIRFAX, Va. -- George Mason redshirt senior captain Matthew Voss earned a major decision in the final bout of the afternoon, lifting the Patriots to a 20-19 win over Edinboro on Sunday at the Recreation Athletic Complex.

    Mason (7-4, 3-2 EWL) defeated Edinboro (2-6, 1-3 EWL) for the first time in program history. The Fighting Scots had won the first five meetings between the two schools.

    The Patriots took the lead when redshirt sophomore Talha Farooq (5-13, 4-7) recorded a 15-12 decision over graduate student Arick Shankles at 125 pounds.

    Farooq trailed, 8-4, heading into the second period. He scored with a late reversal in the third period to take a 12-11 lead on the way to the come-from-behind victory.

    The Fighting Scots won by forfeit at 133 pounds to take a 6-3 advantage in the match.

    At 141 pounds, Mason freshman Julio Alegria (4-13, 3-7) stormed out to an 11-0 first-period lead and recorded a 16-1 technical fall over Edinboro senior Avery Henry to put the Patriots back in front, 8-6.

    Mason redshirt senior Tejon Anthony (23-8, 8-3) led 6-2 after the first period and extended his advantage to 8-3 heading into the final frame at 149 pounds against Edinboro junior Tyler Vath.

    Anthony notched a major decision, 12-4, to improve to 8-3 in duals this season.

    At 157 pounds, Mason freshman Kolby Ho (17-8, 7-2) took a 4-1 lead over Edinboro's Tim Suter heading into the second period.

    Ho then scored with two takedowns in the second to build an 8-3 advantage and won the bout by major decision, 12-4. He has earned bonus points in 11 of his wins this season, with four technical falls, four major decisions and one pin.

    After Mason earned wins in four of the first five bouts, Edinboro recorded victories in four straight.

    The Fighting Scots picked up a 12-4 major decision at 165 pounds, an 8-4 decision at 174 pounds, a 9-4 decision at 184 pounds and a 4-2 decision at 197 pounds to take their first lead in the match, 19-16.

    In the final bout of the afternoon, Voss (25-4, 10-1) posted a takedown and two near-fall points to take a 4-0 first-period lead over Edinboro sophomore Jon Spaulding.

    Voss led 4-1 going into the second period and 7-1 starting the third.

    Needing bonus points to put the Patriots in the win column, Voss went on to post his career-high 25th win of the season with an 11-2 major decision to lift the Patriots to a 20-19 win over the Fighting Scots.

    Voss improved to 5-0 against EWL opponents this season.

    The Patriots finish the EWL portion of the schedule when they host Rider on Thursday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. at the Recreation Athletic Complex.
