It marked Gardner-Webb's first win over Kent State in eight tries.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (4-2) fell behind early, as Kent State picked up major decisions at 125 and 133 pounds for a quick 8-0 lead. Ryan Hull fought hard at 141 pounds for the 'Dogs before falling, 7-5, to Chance Driscoll, as the hosts pulled out to an 11-0 advantage with seven weight classes remaining.
Chris Vassar quickly put Gardner-Webb back in the match, pinning Tim Rooney in only 1:55 at 149 pounds to trim the lead to 11-6. Mosley followed with a hard-fought win at 157, beating Golden Flashes standout Casey Sparkman, 3-1, to pull the 'Dogs within two team points.
It was the first dual loss of the season for Sparkman (11-4 overall).
Tyler Marinelli, ranked No. 12 nationally at 165 pounds, cruised to a 12-2 major decision at 165 pounds to put the 'Dogs up 13-11. Austin Trott improved to 12-1 on the season with a decision at 174 pounds and No. 19 Hunter gamble outlasted Shane Mast at 184 pounds to give Gardner-Webb a 19-11 lead with two bouts remaining.
The Golden Flashes pulled within 19-17 at 197 pounds when Stephen Suglio pinned Drew Barrett in just over two minutes (2:14).
Cornwell went to work in the decisive bout, taking a 2-1 lead after the first period and increasing that lead to 5-1 after the second. Kent State's Devin Nye scored twice in the final period, but could not catch up as Cornwell held on for the win.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will remain in Ohio the rest of the weekend, tackling the Cleveland State Open on Saturday.
