F&M took it to the Marauders with one technical fall, three major decisions, two decisions and one forfeit en route the the win.
The Diplomats jumped out to a commanding 22-0 advantage after the first five bouts. The match began with David Hershberger securing a win by forfeit at 125 pounds to give F&M a 6-0 lead. At 133, Robert Ruiz stretched the F&M edge to 11-0 with a technical fall victory over Joshua Ruppert. Ruiz was aggressive from the get-go, registering a takedown just 11 seconds in. The freshman notched eight additional back points in period one to take a 10-0 lead. Ruiz went on to score six more points late in period two to push the F&M lead to 11-0.
At 141, Richard Durso downed Aaron Trimpey by decision, 11-4. Leading 4-2 heading into period three, Durso registered a key reversal with 1:52 remaining, before tallying two takedowns as time winded down to extend his advantage to a comfortable margin.
Andrew Murano posted the first major decision of the night for F&M at 149 with a 14-5 triumph over Steve Hess. After a scoreless first period, Murano secured three points in the second with an escape and a takedown. In period three, the sophomore methodically delivered four takedowns of Hess in the final 1:34 to earn the major decision.
At 157, Eric Norgard gave F&M its fifth straight bout with an 8-0 major decision against Zac Wawrzyniak-Bush. Norgard notched a takedown at the 1:09 mark of period one, before registering another takedown and a three-point nearfall in the second frame. The third period was scoreless, but the junior amassed over two minutes of riding time to claim his first major decision of the season.
Millersville finally got on the board with a victory by forfeit at 165, but Matt Fullowan iced the win for the Diplomats with a 12-4 major decision over Zach Pincus at 174. Pincus took an early 2-0 edge in the first period, but Fullowan responded with an escape and two takedowns, sandwiched by a Pincus escape, to take a 5-3 lead. After a scoreless second, Fullowan closed out Pincus with two takedowns and a vital two-point nearfall with just 12 seconds left to post the major decision.
Colin Ely scored an 11-5 decision over Joel Suter at 197 for the final F&M points of the night. Ely found himself in an early hole, trailing 5-0 just over a minute into the bout, but bounced right back with an escape and takedown to pull within 5-3 after the first. The senior secured three additional takedowns throughout the bout and totaled over four minutes of riding time to earn the win.
F&M's four seniors, Ely, Fullowan, Matt Latessa and Dave Pucci, had the opportunity to compete at the Mayser Center for the final time tonight in the Diplomats' regular season finale.
The Diplomats return to the mat at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships on Saturday, March 3 at Princeton.
